Access to body side top hinges
I need to replace the upper hinges on the cowl posts, how are you supposed to get to the bolts? Last edited by 13; 12-26-2019 at 12:51 PM. |

Re: Access to body side top hinges
On my '31 delivery the hinges are tapped so the bolts screw right into the hinge. No nuts on the back.

Re: Access to body side top hinges
Yes same on my 28, but how you supposed to get to them? What I'm dealing with is someone torched of all the hinges and in the process the hinge is melted to the posts. I've removed what's left of the lower and mid hinges, but still need to get to the bolt heads of the uppers and they're enclosed within the posts.

Re: Access to body side top hinges
Most closed car As have the screws to hold the hinge piece that attaches to the body A pillar. The are countersunk flat head straight blade screws with the cup washers. The hinge piece fits through the slot in the pillar and the screws are fastened from the door jam side into the threaded hinge piece. What body do you have? Pickups are a bit different but not a lot. Fordors & Cabriolets have wood but they still used screws.

Re: Access to body side top hinges
You need to remove the windshield side garnish. There are 2 screws that hold the garnish in place. Once the screws are removed, the garnish should be able to be removed with a little effort. The two bolts are then exposed. After 90 years you will need heat to remove the bolts. Heat has never failed me using an acetylene torch. Propane wont get the area hot enough. Good luck.
