My attempt at restoring a powerhouse generator

I got a used powerhouse generator on a engine I paid $50 for last year and I had a new set of brushes I got wit a lot of NOS ford parts. So I decided to see if I could bring this old girl back to life.

I found that the field wire had shorted out against the back cover. Also that the field coils were good but the wrap had got brittle and came off a bunch over the years. So I removed them and used cloth tape and liquid electrical tape to do my best at rewrapping them.

And the finish product after cleaning it all up. I have a bunch more pictures but t will only allow one per a post for some reason.

These generators are very rugged. I pulled one out of the dirt. Hard to tell how many decades it had been there. Took it home gave it a general cleaning, slowly got it to turn and then gor the brushes to move again and had it working in less than an hour. Rod

I would have to agree Rod all mine really needed is a good cleaning but I did do a light file clean up of thecommuntator and new brushes anyways. Also installed a diode I had laying a box of old parts in the original cut out also. The stamped steel pulley was a little wobbly and bent so I have since added a cast pulley instead. I have only done a bench test on it by motoring it with a 6v battery.

Looks nice. Don't throw away worn brushes, because new carbon brushes can be cut to size, but the wires and terminals are the hard parts to find.

Sure wish Ford had used the powerhouse for all the Model A's.

Any ideas or pointers where to find Powerhouse gennie parts will be much appreciated. I need bushes and brushes.

Is 3/16" the hole size, or is it the width of the terminal?

At $.70 each, that would add $3.50 to the cost of making a 5 brush set, and you still need to buy the flexible wire and carbon brushes.

3/16" is the hole size.

That would be a bit large for the number 6 screws used for the powerhouse brush terminals.
