went to replace front u-joint after taking off clam shell cover i found what appears to be metal shims inside clam shell, upon inspection i found that they were made from a Folger coffee can, why wound they be in their ? their was 2 of them

I'll take a guess...is it possible that maybe they were put there to take up wear between the clam shells and the bell on the torque tube. Who knows why some barnyard repairs were made like that?

From an old guy.

Whoever did the fix ,did it wrong.
Folgers was normally not used for the fix but store brand cans were
because they were cheaper.

Sorry, Can’t answer. I won’t be old until July. 70 years. Used to be 60 but once I got there, I extended it by 10 years.

They were there for no good reason. I'm old enough to remember a time when Folgers coffee did not exist.

Well, it seems that you're the right guy to answer this question. The predecessor of the Folger coffee company was founded in 1850 and was renamed the J.A. Folger & Company in 1872.

Ok I just turned 71 so I guess I amd old!

Folgers, well why not. If its still there and intack it may have done its job? Now is/ was something worn out? Probably!

The post is a little confusing. Where exactly were the "shims"? Just laying inside, or used on the clamshell itself?

I've used an old .45 caliber shell for a bushing on a shifter rod before. They're brass, and it was the perfect size. Sometimes....what works...works.

Could they possibly been trying to make up for a worn out or absent cork or felt seal in the groove in the very rear of the cover? Not likely.

That is what my parents always drank - believe it was in a big red can? When I started building my 34 Fourdoor, lots of those cans were used for nuts, bolts and small parts. Hell, I probably still have some out in the shop.

This brings back memories. My folks drank "Hill's Bros." coffee, and my dad used the tin cans for much the same purpose. The only problem with them is that if they ever got any moisture in them, you ended up with a rusty mess. The newer plastic coffee "cans" made of plastic with the snap on lids work much better.

thanks for all the replies' , i didn't think any guys under 50 ever worked on older cars
would know what I'm talking about .i liked to use hills brothers coffee cans !!! their was wear on the shims, cork and felt seal were ok, shims were laying on the clam shell inside covered in bearing grease. thanks for all the reply's.
