Default Brake adjustment

Is there a recommended procedure for adjusting the shoes on non self-adjusting brakes (1957 Ford). I've never done it on anything other than the newer self adjusting style, and always just got them close and let the self-adjusters do their thing. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Adjust the brakes out until you cannot turn the wheel in either direction, then back off 10 adjuster notches. That should give you about .030" normal shoe to drum clearance.

It's EZ to convert to self adjusting and cheap Your '57 uses the same shoes as Galaxies up to '74 the rears are same as a '67 F-100 so you just get the hardware kits and self adjuster kits for those models.Check out this for the procedure complete with pictures. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...#post-10196463

Thanks for the info. I'll set them using Bob's method for now, but definitely look into changing them to self-adjusting in the future.

Jeff, I can't get that link to work and not having any luck using a search either. Things are really screwed up on the HAMB now. Can you check the link and/or suggest some key search words I might use - I'd really like to see that thread. Thanks.

Try a s Bob said , however I usually do them a little tighter, if you have the wheel on spin the wheel and you get about 1 1/2 turns , very light drag. Good if you have a helper on the pedal they can gently apply a bit of drag on the brakes and you can see if one needs a tweek more than the other , see if they lock up together.

Interesting post for the rookie me.
My front driver side drum is dragging a bit and while driving if I hit the brakes it will turn left slightly.
I will flush and check the system front to back. At first sight nothing is wrong except that dragging issue. Also one of those little rubber plugs at the port hole is missing. No leaks.
What I want to ask, sorry for hijacking the thread a bit, is what will I find once I get a screwdriver inside the adjusting porthole. Posts and reports online talk about getting the hang of "it" and learning by trial, but I'd like to know exactly what I'll find.
Is there a socket? Turn clock or counter clockwise?
Thanks

Is that little wheel the adjuster (red arrow)? Does it spin up or down with the tip of a long screwdriver?

It goes either way, one way tightens the adjustment and the other way backs it off. I forget which way is which. A screwdriver is not the best tool for the job because the blade will keep slipping off the adjuster. See if you can find a brake spoon. The blade is wider and it has the correct angle. Follow this link to see what a brake spoon looks like:

Cool Dobie! I'll probably be able to find one to borrow, but surely I'll make one for myself.
Thanks

I've tried the link in post #3 several times and get nothing but an error message.

Tried a search on the HAMB and (somehow) ended up in some kind of "profile posts" (or something like that) discussion area of the author's, where they were talking about the thread getting lost and being renamed, missing pictures, etc., etc.. The "new" link given there also just resulted in an error message.

Cross your fingers that Fordbarn doesn't go the way of the HAMB - it's a disaster.

So on a whim, I logged out of the HAMB, tried the link again and guess what - it worked!! Logged back in on the HAMB, tried the link again and guess what - I get the error message again:

THE H.A.M.B. - ERROR
You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action.

So much for the benefits of being a member!! I guess I must be on a bad-guy list!!

Anyways thanks to all for posting the links and trying to help. If anyone else is getting the error message, try logging out - it may work.

Randy don't despair. I had the same problem and couldn't get on this forum. I cured it by going into the browser settings and deleting browsing history and clearing cache of passwords, cookies etc..
I access the internet generally from an iPad and Safari, but Google Chrome and Firefox both have the same feature. Internet Explorer?- does anyone browse with that anymore?
I keep my browser logged in.
