Re: 41 Ford front axel spring perches
am I looking at the shock mount wrong or are they on the wrong side? should be almost straight up and down and if you look at the mount they are tilted to make them this way

Re: 41 Ford front axel spring perches
I used stock shocks on my '41 Fordor for years. Worked fine. Can be adjusted for ride. Best ride I could get after trying a bunch of tube shock combos

Re: 41 Ford front axel spring perches
How does the adjustment work, mine are set in the center position. I know they can be adjusted to make them stiffer or softer. but which way for stiffer, ccw or cw. They look like they have been overhauled, maybe just painted I don't know. Al

Re: 41 Ford front axel spring perches
Torchie why are the 41 front ends different from the 40. What makes them difficult to tune for driveability ? I've had no experience with a 41 before and don't know anything about the problems associated with it. I've owned several cars with what looks to be the same set-up and never had a problem with 40, 46 48 Fords and they look the same to me. Al

It wasn't fun until I backed the shocks off a bit. I painted arrows on mine and have even adjusted them on trips. I carry a 4" adj. wrench ant it works fine for that. |

I'm not sure what "tuning for drivability" necessarily means when it comes to fat-fendered Ford front ends, but '41s do have a couple of differences that some folks haven't noticed. For instance, it is generally stated that '37-'41 spindles (the ROUND backs) are all the same. Well, many passenger-side spindles on '41s have the drag link attached from the TOP instead of from the bottom, which means that the taper at the end of the arm is tapered from the opposite direction as ALL '37-'40s. You can't use one of these goofy spindles on a '37-'40 because the drag link will hit the wishbone. One other difference is the wishbone itself. It is a "one-year-only" wishbone that measures about 4" or so longer (front to rear) when measuring between the I-beam axle and the ball. DD |

Re: 41 Ford front axel spring perches
I am in the process of installing tube shocks in my 1936 Ford Cabriolet and plan to go from the after market top perch to a perch I will have in my axle about 2 1/2" from the king pin lock pin. Now for the problem.
Does anyone know of a list of shocks by size as to shock resting height, Mine is 16" full extended height, and Mine is 18 to 20" axle to bump stop rubber Mine is 2 1/2" If you know the brand and or part # I would appreciate the info. Any info would help/ Thanks |

Re: 41 Ford front axel spring perches
Don't know if it will help but here's the shock set up on my 40. These shocks are from 1963. The rears are the same as a 51 Mercury. I believe 1940 was the first year for the anti sway (stabilizer) bar. This photo was taken with complete OEM front suspension except for the tube shocks. These shocks appear on Ebay once in a while. Still worked fine after install of 4 in. dropped axle years later.
