59AB Thermostat clocking
I’ve read where the jiggle valve should be at the 12 o’clock position. Relative to what?? Looking from the front of the car, the driver’s side or passenger side??? Thanks

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
I think you are thinking of a horizontal installation, then it should be to 12 o'clock, or at top

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
Might make a difference on an 8BA where it is mounted at 45 deg. to level but on a 59AB where it is almost level, I doubt it makes any difference.

Those/these instructions apply when the mount plate is vertical or close to vertical. (makes no difference on the 59AB) If you want to get technical mount it facing to the front of the vehicle ( that side is slightly higher because of the angle the engine is installed at) check this------ https://www.gatestechzone.com/en/new...tat-jiggle-pin

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
My apologies for my previous post today. I had never heard a thermostat part refered to as a jiggle valve.

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
I'd be more concerned if they actually opened at the water temp desired. Easy to do with a a pot of water on the stove and a cooking thermometer. Jiggle me crazy.

What if I have a 4" drop axle and a heavy rake. Lot of guys drill a couple holes in temps too. I would not worry about it. Don't overthink it. |

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
If it were a good idea to drill holes in thermostats wouldn't they be supplied that way? Never made any sense to me.

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
For the thermostat to open, the water temperature at the bi-metal part must reach the rated temperature. With the thermostats way up in the neck of a 59A/B, it takes a while for convection to get the temperature there up to that of water in the head below. In starting my '41 cold, the temperature gauge would always go to 200, and then drop down to 170 when the stats opened. That is not really a problem for the engine, but it makes me anxious every time I see that gauge go too high. So I drilled two 5/32 holes in each thermostat, and now the temp just comes up to 170 and stays there. Maybe the little bit of water bypass during warm up causes the warm up time to take a minute longer, but that is fine with me.

Re: 59AB Thermostat clocking
Yeah, I've heard people say they always drill holes in thermostats, sometimes lots of them. The "jiggle valve" is intended to reduce or eliminate air pockets after a coolant change or thermostat replacement, is my understanding.
It just seems to me the thermostat is designed to open & flow at carefully engineered operating points and drilling holes in it would bugger this. If a 170° seems to spike too high at startup, why not then simply run a 160°? (minus the drill holes) Not arguing I'm right and you're wrong, but it doesn't make sense to me to permanently upset the calibration of a thermostat. |
