Ford Script Battery
I have a 1947 Ford Super Deluxe. I am in need of a new 6 volt battery in the correct Ford script case. I believe my current one is simply an Optima battery in a reproduction case. Does any one still make these? Can the old case be re-used with a new Optima battery?
Any information or direction greatly appreciated. Thank you. David Daoust Stratham, NH David Daoust |

Re: Ford Script Battery
No direct experience, but I think the new Optima batteries are taller than the older ones. I would guess you need to measure your current battery to see what height it is.

Re: Ford Script Battery
Battery central mall has antique batteries. I just bought one for our 52 F1 and it works great. They are make to order so it takes time to arrive, I think mine took two months.

Re: Ford Script Battery
I had a Ford Script 6 volt battery in my '39 years ago and maybe it was my charging system but replaced with and Optima in a Ford Script enclosure and never looked back. Sold the '39 a couple of years ago, but saved the enclosure. Fast forward to my '47 SuperDeluxe. Got a new...yes taller....Optima 6 volt and placed the enclosure over it....without the wood bottom.....and it works fine. You've got plenty of height in your battery compartment. Hold down fits perfectly.
My attempts to salvage the old original Ford case didn't work out....probably "user" error. |

Re: Ford Script Battery
Your original battery would have been a 2HF, which does accept the taller Optima battery as supplied these days. Just buy the battery and reuse your Ford Script case.

Re: Ford Script Battery
Battery Central Mall. But they ain’t cheap! Just paid $379, delivered. And as mentioned in post #3, took several months to get it. But sure looks purdy in my ‘40. Fits perfectly. Per Kube’s recommendation, I brushed an imperfect light coat of gold paint on the Ford script. To my eye looks like it just came off the assembly line.
Supposedly guys are seeing 10 years of more from Optimas in collector car usage. Hope that holds true. This was a big investment for just a battery. Last edited by JayChicago; 06-01-2021 at 11:51 PM. |

Jay, next time, use a small rubber hobby roller: Perfect results, and may well have been the factory method anyway.

These Ford Script Battery Case to suit 6 Volt Optima Battery are made in Australia, and were seen at a recent Australian Early Ford V8 Nationals. |

Re: Ford Script Battery
Looks great. Do you have any source information to buy them? I have an old case that I have intended to gut for years but this looks a lot cleaner!

Re: Ford Script Battery
I was gonna ask the same thing, but when I saw he was "down under", I got a little discouraged. If they are available, perhaps we could make a "multiple buy" and save on shipping and customs, which are probably as much or more than the cost of the cases.

Re: Ford Script Battery
It would be cleaner, for sure! Gutting an old case is a dirty job, but not difficult at all.

Re: Ford Script Battery
I have just contacted the Manufacture of these Ford Script Battery Cases and he has just sold the last one. He does not plan on making any more, which is a real shame, as they are great cases. Regards Mercman <>< |

Re: Ford Script Battery
These 1933/1934 Ford Script Battery Cases that whizzernick makes look good, bus as the Batteries in 1933/1934 Fords are located under the floor, it seems that they don't have a Lid? The Batteries on 1935/1936 Fords are also located under the Floor. If whizzerneck could make a suitable Lid, they could be used in later models starting with the 1937 Ford where the Battery is housed in the Firewall. |
