Default late 1931 pickup gas tank removal.

My tank has some rust and I was taking it out for cleaning. all the screws and bolts came out easy. It tips up in the front until the fuel tube hits the hole in the firewall. How do I get it out. I cant seem to get it. I started to read about how to get it out and It seems everyone says to try and fix it in the car. If I do go this route I am afraid I already screwed up my welting. Should I just bolt it back in and hope?

I'll have to go out tomorrow and look at mine, but isn't there a screw head bolt under each of the windshield post garnish's ? I can't remember. You should be able to tell if you screwed up the welt. That welt is the one thing I hate installing. It's a real booger.

Raise up in back first It will pull up at about a 30 degree angle and lift out
It would surprise me if you can reuse welting
It has to be pulled and the trimmed when in place
Good luck

Be patient. It is a real pain in the ass but if your not in a hurry it will turn out nice. You need to pie cut the welting where it is the curved areas and you need a needle nose type pliers to pull the welting from the inside snug. I have done it a number of times but it takes time.

That +*%#^$# WELTING!!! I have a friend that's a MASTER car builder, fabricator, restorer, etc. None of his Model A's EVER have any welt, ANYWHERE!! After painting & assembley, he caulks the cracks, smooths them very neat, & has his pinstriper paint the caulking to match the other colors! It looks so perfectly done, that NO one ever notices it. He says he still has bad dreams about the last time he TRIED to install that +*^#%$# welting!! Bill W.

Take an old bed sheet and cut out 1" strips, staple the strips to the welting. This will give you something to pull the welting in place and once in place a quick pull will remove the strips.

I think that it will also be necessary to remove the windshield. You will need lots of room to get the 31 tank out from the rear. The welt will be a pita.

I do have the originals in good enough shape to use as a pattern.

I also have the windshield out for replacement at this time.

Does the welting get glued to anything?

I assume the order of operation would be:

put in the welting.

Put in the tank.

Pull the welting till tight.

bolt tank down.

No glue Matt. Don't make it any harder than it is. I like Mike's suggestion about stapling strips of cloth to it. I am going to try that on the next one.

I've seen guys use self adhesive Velcro to hold it in place or to build up the thickness when a crack is too wide to grip the welting well. I had a loose spot in one strip & injected glue with a syringe & taped it down 'til it dried. Bill W.

So do i need two different kinds? I ordered the anti squeek welting. But that is only for the firewall and the back? I need another kind for the sides?

The reproduction welting and anti squeak seem a lot different than what I took out. does anyone have pictures of how this goes together?
