Need a couple of new cutting wheels
Good Morning...I am looking for new little cutting wheels about 1/2 inch diameter and about 20 thousands thick to clean up the armatures of Generators and Starters. The couple that we have had for years are about shot. No name on them...and so far, after lots of looking I'm stumped! Hope someone on the barn has the answer. Contact me here or text me at [email protected]. Thanks very much...Ernie in Arizona

Re: Need a couple of new cutting wheels
Ernie,
Dremel makes some that are .020 thick but are 0.900 Catalog #409. They come in a plastic "bottle" 36 to a bottle. These do fracture quite easily though. If I remember Harbor Fright Has some no name ones too. I use them to reduce the number of coils on Heli-coils when only wrong size is available. Might not work on armatures. Years ago Bill Kenz told me that starter armatures should NOT be under cut. Only Generators. Is that still true? Last edited by Benson; 02-13-2023 at 08:28 AM. |

Re: Need a couple of new cutting wheels
Back when I was a wee one I was taught to use hacksaw blades, filed flat (no kerf), to hog out commutators.

Re: Need a couple of new cutting wheels
I also only undercut generator armatures - starters don't spin fast enough to catch the carbon dust.

Re: Need a couple of new cutting wheels
Undercutting a starter depends on the type of brush, compacted copper brushes— no undercutting, soft carbon brushes ( mostly going on old european starters many times are undercut)
Try — martindaleco.com —- years ago i got cutters from them for the Hillhorst undercutting machine i have. |

Re: Need a couple of new cutting wheels
Kerf width is important on each different type of commutator. The pull type hand saws are available that can cut different kerf widths depending on the need. Regular hack saws have a pretty wide kerf due to the offsets in the teeth. The Japanese make some really good pull saw blades. I just do it by hand.

Re: Need a couple of new cutting wheels
X-acto had some thin blade, fine tooth saws that I've used since I was a kid for cutting plastics. There are clones currently available on Amazon.

For the benefit of those who may read this thread in the future, but are not quite sure what is being discussed - here is a photo of mine.
