GAV wont stay put
We have 31'. The GAV moves freely and can adjust it for starting. Once your headed down the road and you try to close it up(clockwise) it just vibrates itself back to about 1/2 a turn open and then sticks there. Any suggestions on how to remedy this? I believe we have a Zenith 2 carb.

I’ve had the same issue for 40 years.

Re: GAV wont stay put
The GAV needle housing has 4 slits at the end and usually a metal ring at the end that compresses the housing to keep the needle from turning. Try gently squeezing the ends together or try putting a metal ring on, which is sometimes missing. You can also order a new one with the metal ring from the parts suppliers.
The metal ring is slit so that it fits over the end when stretched, sort of like a circlip. You can make the ring by bending a wire into a circular shape. I have had to enlarge the ring or remove it to make my GAV turn easy enough.

A new dash grommet will help to stabilize it also.

Re: GAV wont stay put
I have used a scratch awl to expand the ring, and when fitting the inner shaft I would burnish it in.

Re: GAV wont stay put
When it "vibrates itself back to about 1/2 a turn" does it run good?
Some cars have a mind of their own, ever see that twilight zone episode with the haunted Model A? - (And it too was a '31)

Re: GAV wont stay put
Turns out it was just play in the rod vibrating. It wasn’t really turning at the carb. The connection is tight there. Now Im concerned we were running it closed and too lean and we have done other damage.

Re: GAV wont stay put
I guess the GAV knows where it wants to run.
A half turn is just right. |
