top molding and other misc questions
quick question, My 17 year old son and i are semi restoring a 31 Slant window fordoor. we have the chassis complete now onto the body. His goal is a daily driver to school for his senior year, so we have a definite deadline. He is paying for most of the items he needs by either working around the shop, assembling distributor, or even horse trading so that should help to explain the budget.
I'm looking for some opinions on several things. 1) last night we removed the top molding. It came off straight enough that i feel we can reuse it (remember a 17 year old and a tight budget). the rubber insert in the molding that goes down the sides and across the back is hard as a rock. Any suggestions on how to remove that rubber while not destroying the moldings? 2) since it is a slant window there is very little wood in the body compared to a straight window car. So it seems that either Ford or somebody in the past stuffed cotton padding between the metal support pieces and the sheet metal body panels. the padding is pretty nasty (age, mice...) what do you think about using Great Stuff window and door foam to spray between the sheet metal and the supports. I say window and door as it doesn't expand as much as the other spray foams. |

Re: top molding and other misc questions
The original moldings should be steel. Treat them carefully and on a fairly flat surface.
A heat gun (no flame)and a small blade screwdriver should go fairly easy. Round stock can be had from McMaster Carr o replace As to the spray insulation even non~expanding ...I’d be skeptical Last edited by Oldbluoval; 05-19-2021 at 07:12 AM. |

Re: top molding and other misc questions
Jeff, two thoughts. To your first question, you may be able to use compressed air to help force the rubber up out of the channel. Just blast the air from under the rubber as you work your way around the trim lifting the filler upward. If it is original rubber, then it is natural rubber that can be softened somewhat with warm water or maybe a heat gun (hair dryer).
To my knowledge Ford (-or his vendors) did not use cotton as an anti-squeak in those locations. It was more like roofing felt paper. At this point I don't think I would bother with the foam. One other thought with the foam is it will be acting more as a glue to bond the wood to the metal, and these cars flex tremendously driving down the road. I don't think that would be a good thing considering the age of the wood. If he is insistent in having something to replace the cotton, just make a very small squirt of the foam. |
