Default Wandering Pheasant

I've noticed lately that my Quail wanders. I start with it tightened, and as I drive, the top piece starts to drift counterclockwise until it pops open. There doesn't seem to be much friction holding it when its supposed to be in the "locked" position. Was wondering if others experienced this (this is a repro Quail radiator ornament). Pictures show in locked, then unlocked position and does so gradually as I'm driving - it is now moving smoothly and with little effort unlatches.

Flying quail. Mine latches firmly, have to hold it tight to loosen/tighten. You could try a thicker gasket.

Add a second gasket.

Check Ace Hardware for a thicker seal/O ring and glue it in place. Been there.

Easy fix. Snyder's has a rubber "O" ring that makes it a little tighter and seals better than the hard gasket.. Also the brass ring that that goes in the gas gauge fits under the "O" ring to make it even slightly more tighter.

No need to spend any money to fix your quail. Make your own gaskets / shims. If you make its lockup fit too tight, the ears in the lower part of the cap will crack-off. Keep in mind the cap is made of pot metal (AKA ZAMAC).

I just changed the 0 ring as mentioned, and it cured my quail from wondering.

The old Mexican told me: "Slow down and get finished sooner", he was right.
