Default 59ab hard start when hot

Car starts fine....hard starting when hot.....just a few minutes after turning off. Crab distributor with points from Bubba using his supplied coil and balast. The coil is blue in color as the first one was purple and defective which was gladly replaced. The 2 holley 94s were done by charlie ny with blocked PV. When hot this car will not restart. I pull #5 plug wire , place screw driver into plug wire to check for spark and motor starts right up....did this twice on two separate occasions.
Running solid core wires and coil is mounted horizontally. Spark plug wires are run through individual stainless tubes which are not grounded. Going to ground these stainless tubes..... any chance the coil position is problematic ....or ????

Running mechanical fuel pump with an electric pump for start up. Regulator set at 2.5 psi

What ohm coil do you have? Are you running a ballast resistor?

Not sure of the ohms....using the coil and ballast that Bubba supplied.

Is there a problem running a coil horizontal vs vertical.

When cold the engine starts right up. With the plugged PV , gas can't be leaking down.

Coil is OK either way. So you are saying when you remove #5 plug wire, the engine starts?

When hot engine turns freely but will not start. I remove #5 wire because its the easiest for me to work with as im by myself. I put a screw driver in the plug wire and place the screw driver close to the spark plug to check for spark. The engine starts.....!!! Just has me stumped.

As a side note, when i put the rebuilt carbs on the car, it just wouldn't pop. After many attempts I decided to just crank until the starter quit. After extensive time it fired up. Changed nothing....just cranked. Been starting easily when cold since

Kind of unrelated, but still good to know : After sitting for a long period, these (and a lot of other) cars will start much easier and faster if the carburetor bowl is primed through the vent (that slanted tube coming out of the choke opening on a 94 carb). I keep a cheap ketchup squeeze bottle full of gas around just for this purpose; the opening is just the right fit for the vent tube and it has an attached cap to keep it closed when not in use. I went and got my '68 Corvette out of winter storage last week and used this method; after sitting all winter, it fired and started on about the second turn. If I try a "dry" start after sitting that long, it seems like it takes forever to get gas into the carb. Just a tip.

Cranking an engine for an "extensive time" can damage ignition components. It may depend on how the coil was wired in to the system. If it is using the by-pass that applies 12v directly to the coil that could be a factor. The symptoms you are describing sounds like there could be a capacitor issue to me.

Yes, it is mounted in the engine compartment. Between the intake and head inline with cylinder 5

U'r stock start ignition system has an in line ballast under U'r dash, make sure U'r circuit is only using one of them or U'r Ohm's is X 2 & voltage being reduced X 2.

Is there a factory resistor under the dash?

No resistor under tbe dash. Just the external ballast.

That resister often is not known when going to 12 volts. I found that on my car.
When you checking for spark take the wire out of coil and hold 1/2" from ground.
This is better then firing even 2 times around, fires even cylinder. Nice sharp sounding spark. Don,t give any gas when starting.

I believe I have this correct. During starting ur ignition should deliver higher voltage (full 12V) during starts and gets a direct shot of 12V from the starter while cranking by-passing the ballast only during the start. Then not to burn coil out after engine starts the voltage to the coil drops via the ballast circuit not to burn the coil out.

Hot in Florida but I decided to take the 35 out. Long story short, I killed the engine going into the garage, H20 temp at 190......hit the starter button immediately.....cranked but no start.....tried off and on for the next 1/2 hr, even gave a good shot of starter fluid, looked like weak spark.....won't start. ran the battery down. Foot starter button was erratic so I'm changing to a solenoid start. Coil @ 1.8ohms, ballast @ 2.7 ohms. As earlier stated coil is mounted horizontally and above left front head....gets hot. Bad coil when hot..??....recently changed the condenser.

Love the car but afraid to drive anywhere.....thinking about naming it the Titanic....always gets halfway !!

6 volt system? If so, get rid of the resistor. You've only got about 1.5 volts at the coil.
