AA truck rear ends
recently found a couple of 29 trucks....one had the usual worm drive rear but the other had one ive never seen. it looked just like the car banjo rear except 3x bigger! the cantalever springs and torquetube bolted just like they should. it didnt appear to be something cobbled in from another vehicle. it also wasnt the clamshell type from the later trucks. did i find some rare oddity or just something that doesnt belong ?

Re: AA truck rear ends
There was a large spiral-bevel gear type banjo rear used in the trucks for a short time. I don't know much about it. If you look at an era Ford Parts Price List book, you can see parts for this truck rear.
I think there were also 28-29 Canadian trucks with a banjo-type rear, and they had an open driveshaft with no torque tube. My friend has one of these trucks. It even has a different brake system that uses cables. The friend is an avid collector of AA's and he says the Canadian truck is authentic. |

Re: AA truck rear ends
Here are a couple of pictures of this bevel gear rear axle (early '29 usage I believe). The backing plates and radius rods are the same as used for the worm drive.

Re: AA truck rear ends
O.K. all you truck gurus..tell me why there were so many different rear Diffs? I would think that Henry would have stuck with one style and maybe changed just the ratios.

Re: AA truck rear ends
A lot of the Canadian 29 AA s used a Timken rear end w -a removeable cover. They also had open drive shaft & cable brakes. In an old issue of Vintage Canada it stated that there was a bumper crop of Wheat that year & Ford couldnt get enough rear ends for trucks needed to haul the harvest,so they modified the chassies for the Timken rear ends, wood spoke wheels were also used. The wheels were similar to the 25-27 TT rearwheels, but with AA hubs & used all around. Most 28-29 AAs in Canada had Brantford cabs that had a lot of wood in them.
