Re: Fatigue Cracks In Model "A" Parts
Who hasn't seen a cracked front cross member?

My '31 has a couple of small cracks in the flywheel housing. Looking at them, I did not think they would ever become a problem, however I did order an un-cracked replacement housing should I ever pull the engine again. I wonder if such small cracks have ever resulted in any kind of actual running failure? I also had the radiator fill tube separation as noted earlier...an easy solder fix. 90+ years and still going...better than me, LOL... |

Re: Fatigue Cracks In Model "A" Parts
Where the radiator intake connects to the top tank is a frequent fatigue failure. The upper hose is very stiff and as the engine moves, especially with float-a-motors, it put high stress into that joint. We have had several of these in our club.

Funny you should ask. This just happened this week. I have never seen a water-pump casting that broke because of a too tight fan belt before tjis one.

Re: Fatigue Cracks In Model "A" Parts
This is a pretty short list of parts considering the age and technology available for the time.
I like the broken gear, I have one from a Honda motorcycle where the tooth is broken on both sides and wiggles like a 3 year old's loose tooth. It came out of a running motor/trans in a kart, still together.
