Shutoff valve packing stuck
Removed my original '31 fuel shutoff valve from the tank and can't see how to get the old packing out to replace it. Is there a trick?
Thanks. (It drips slowly, tired off the coffee can on the floor board) |

Re: Shutoff valve packing stuck
If this is a late 1931 shutoff (under the hood) just loosen the gas valve pack nut and put a drift pin in the outlet (on the bottom) and push the valve out.

Re: Shutoff valve packing stuck
This car is an early 31 (Oct 30), valve is inside the car. Does the valve shaft pullout or unscrew? Pulling on it with fingers doesn't work.

Re: Shutoff valve packing stuck
Sometimes the packing is so tight that you will have to press or hammer the valve out. I had to use a dental pick to remove my packing when I lapped the valve.

Re: Shutoff valve packing stuck
Tom,
I built a small puller like one for a steering wheel and finally got it out. The fiber type packing was really tough. What are you using to lap it with? Any tricks to it? thanks |

Re: Shutoff valve packing stuck
It's been 10 years or more, but I seem to recall using my lathe and fine emmery cloth to polish the valve. I used toothpaste to seat the carb needed and seat and may have use some toothpaste on the shutoff valve also. Both have been great since then. I lost 10 gallons over the winter before the fix.

Re: Shutoff valve packing stuck
I used valve lapping compund and did it slowly by hand. Then cleaned everything real well before reassembly and it has worked great (no leaks) ever since.

My valve is the same inside the car early 31. The packing is fused in the housing. Can you pull on the shaft to loosen?
