Old Engine, Douglas, NOT FORD
We recently aquired a 2 cyl, opposed, Douglas aircraft engine originally made in England. It 's free and turns over, We don't know if it has spark or not. We have usual questions, like how many were made? I've been "fitutzin" around aviation for a while and I never heard of a Douglas engine. And of course, What's it worth? The years of manufacture were from 1925 to 1936, Info is pretty scarce.

Re: Old Engine, Douglas, NOT FORD
Hello Terry,
Here is a link to a Forum in the UK, Douglas Motor Cycles, it has some pics of aero engines, maybe you could contact them for info on the engine you have. Regards Brian. http://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/in...p?topic=1849.0 Last edited by Brian T; 07-05-2012 at 10:31 PM. |

Re: Old Engine, Douglas, NOT FORD
Thanks guys! I'm beginning to question it's being an aircraft engine at all. Douglas built Engines for motorcycles, generators etc. Plus, I'm in Pa and the engine's in NJ and I really haven't had a good look at it. The only aluminum, opposed 2 cyl I had heard of were BMW MCs, VWs and Porsches, and Franklin AC engines, I knew it wasn't on of the first 3 so I assumed it was the AC application.

Re: Old Engine, Douglas, NOT FORD
There is an Aviation Museum in Eagles Mere, PA that has huge a huge collection of vintage small horsepower engines. If there was any one place that might have one like yours, that museum might be it.
If you could email a picture to me, I will repost it here and on my Facebook page so that my vintage airplane friends might be able to help. Gar Williams [email protected] http://www.eaglesmereairmuseum.org/ |

Re: Old Engine, Douglas, NOT FORD
Lawrence also made 2 cyl opposed aero engines [A3 series] during the mid to late teens..
Douglas made motorcycles with 2 cylinder opposed engines.. |

OK...go to Google advanced image http://www.google.com/advanced_image_search and just put Douglas motorcycle on the phrase line...pictures of quite a few models from a considerable range of time, and some picyures of motors alone.

Maytag made a 2-cylinder opposed engine for their washing machines. When Dad converted the washing machine to electric, the engine went on my go-cart!
