leaking water bag
I have a 10 year old repro water bag that streams water out of the bottom corners. It's funny this topic came up, because I was thinking of getting it to "hold" water and use it as an conversation starter.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I could "coat" the inside with to slow/stop the running. Maybe some kind of silicone? I'm not planning on using it for potable water. Thanks Chuck |

Re: leaking water bag
You might not but someone later may. You might try sewing it.

Re: leaking water bag
It's either not canvas or not sewed tight. I have a very old canvas bag that the previous owner hung from the Motometer. I presume it does not leak. While try it out tomorrow. At 29 Palms in the 1960's we had large canvas bags that, once throughly soaked, never leaked and held our drinking water.

Re: leaking water bag
If you sealed the inside it would no longer function as a cooler bag.

Re: leaking water bag
The material the bags are made of is linen from flax and needs to soak in water overnight before you fill it for use. The fibers swell to make it hold water. I have used them with my "A" crossing the Mohave desert in the summer. the water comes in handy.

Re: leaking water bag
Desert water bags are apparently still available (whether of flax linen or not, I am not sure) although the minimum order is two (2) @ 2 for $52.00 + shipping/handling/tax/etc. Sold by Canvas Specialty (www.can-spec.com) of Los Angeles. Water is extra...

Re: leaking water bag
I seem to remember my father presoaking the empty bag in a bucket of water for a while. San Bernardino gets hot in the summer. After the first swallow you get past the taste. Bob

Re: leaking water bag
Heck, what's a factor of 2 in the price? On reflection, a couple of refilled 2-liter soda bottles in the ol' Igloo cooler are looking better...
