Gordon & Smith compressor questions Photos Added
I have a running Gordon & Smith Model A compressor that I am thinking about selling, but I have no idea what the value would be. The engine has 190 hours since a complete rebuild about 25 years ago. It has been bored .100 over, crank turned with mains repoured and fitted, and rebuilt connecting rods. The compressor is complete with all working controls. I have an extra Gordon & Smith cylinder head and several extra compressor head gaskets. I pulled all the tank fittings to look inside the tank several years ago and it is clean inside with no rust pitting. When the engine is warm, it will fill the 30 gal tank from 0 psi to 120 psi in 30 seconds. The engine is governed to 1600rpm max. Would anyone here have an idea of what I should ask for it?

Re: Gordon & Smith compressor questions
Wish I were closer, I'd be interested. Do you have any pictures of your set-up?

Re: Gordon & Smith compressor questions
There were factory Gorden Smith air compressors sold as well as kits where you could source your own Model A frames, cowls radiator etc. Some folks opted to build their own frame and any radiator, gas tank etc. I recently bought a compressor from the later category so I plan to build my own like the second category. It has all the original parts ( head, governor, valves, tank, etc.) These are very interesting machines and worth a read,,,

Re: Gordon & Smith compressor questions
TerryO, Thank you for your reply. AS best as I can tell from the facebook link that redmodelt posted, my compressor was a Smith factory built compressor with the '28-'29 Model A cowl. When I bought it about 35 years ago, it was missing the radiator, radiator shell, and tool box behind the tank. The cowl was there, but was too rough to use and the tongue and parking jack were too bent up to salvage. I welded on a new tongue and jack and I used a radiator and fuel tank that I removed from an old Massey Harris combine. I will try to get some photos posted later this week.
Thanks again, Mark |
