Default Metal Data Plate

Hello all, I have a question in regards to the Metal Patent plate that gets attached to the firewall.

How do I attach to the firewall, I know the fuel tank is right there and I don't want to drill into the tank.

Thanks!

28 & 29 cars have the upper firewall in front of the actual front wall of the tank. There is enough room between to set the rivets for a patent plate. The rivets generally come with a new plate and are not difficult to set. They are drive type rivets. Just back them up with a piece of bar stock and drive them in with a correct size setting tool. They have spiral gripping flutes that hold them solid.

Take care removing the old ones. You don't want the holes to get oversized if possible.

Canton - there should be holes in the firewall for the rivets for the data plate. No drilling should be required.

will I be able to use a simple hammer to drive the rivet in, or do I need a special tool (yet something else to order)

It would be a good idea to back the sheet metal up when you drive them in. Find a small socket that the shaft of the rivet will slide into, then put a ratchet or breaker bar on that socket. Get the rivet started into the hole, have your helper surround the back side of the sheet metal with the rivet in the socket, and have them press against the sheet metal as you tap the rivet in with a hammer from the other side.
