Default Source for insulated ammeter nuts

I’m looking for replacement nuts for the ammeter and pop-out ignition switch screw terminals - originals were Bakelite-insulated. Vendors I’ve checked with tell me they cannot source replacements for these now. Does anyone know of a current supplier ?

Thanks - Jim

Snyder's should have but i didn't check.
i have only seen plastic insulators on the new ones , there may be some that are actually bakelite i don't know for sure.

what i do know for sure is, if you have a connection that is loose or corroded with lots of resistance at the ammeter terminal the heat will melt those plastic insulators. make sure the connections are clean and tight.

That's a great point, which I wouldn't have thought of. In theory, plastic should work as well as Bakelite for insulation. But you're totally right, it wouldn't hold up to heat, which is an obvious risk.

There is a man in Florida who sells original ammeters. When I got mine it has insulated nuts. Can't recall the name, sorry. Bill

Also be aware the insulated nuts used on the new reproduction (cheap junk) ammeters have metric threads as I recall.

thanks all for our comments. I do have an older repro ammeter with plastic insulated nuts, one of which is partially melted, so I take the advice about good clean connections seriously.

Bakelite is a much better insulating material, but I suspect only original nuts have Bakelite insulation.

None of the vendors seem to have these available right now.

Thanks - Jim

Doesn't McMaster -Carr sell bakelite? Make your own nuts.

I think the bakelite was molded over brass inserts on the originals. I remember making bakelite in an organic chemistry class is high school. If a person had the molds & proper materials, they could be reproduced. I wouldn't say that is would be easy though.

There are bakelite binding post terminals available but mostly from China and most are metric thread. Some times old surplus stuff shows up on flea-pay.
