Default float height

Set my float height to 1-5/16" per the instructions in the carb kit. Also set float drop. New, USA-made fuel pump installed. Pump rod at nominal length. Engine running great, idles nice but I get an occasional "burp" of fuel out the bowl vent. Does this sound like a float height problem or too-high fuel pressure?

Instructions in the kit weren't real clear about setting float height; just wondering what others have used and if anyone's seen this problem before. It's a model 94 carb on a '46 mercury ('46 Ford engine).

I set them at 1 3/8" to 1 7/16 slightly lower than specs. Also use 5.5 power valve and a old school steel needle, not rubber tipped.Float drop is not criticle as long as needle drops about 1/8" with float in lowest position [needle is open] to let gas in. Also check link from AP to throttle has no excessive up and down play. ken ct.

I'll try that setting. Always use the steel needle myself. Thanks!

Sure is nice to hear the sound of that flathead. Starts right up. All the work was worth it.

Original specs are in decimal inches @ 1.322" - 1.353"
1 & 11/32" would be right in that range @ 1.340"
1 & 5/16" is just under @ 1.310"
1 & 3/8" is just over @ 1.380"
1 & 7/16" is over @ 1.440"

Here is the repair manual instructions with specs:

Here is a gauge I made of card stock to set at 1 & 5/16" That's the setting I use and it works fine.

You might check your fuel pressure. Specs are for 1.5 to 3.5 psi.

I use my above specs on all 94. 1 fella claimed he ran out of gas @ that setting ,but he mentioned later he was running almost WOT for miles at like 85 mph.He raised it slightly to probebly your setting and problem was gone.Who runs at that speed for miles and miles in a flat head.A stock one at that.Kinda pushing it i say. Nice idea - I'll have a go at making one myself.

Also agree on the old school steel needles - had a flooding ploblem until I swapped in some old needles from "Junk" carbs.

Mart.
