As far as I can figure, if you use Flathead Ted's delux kit no building up of the backing plates is required. I got most things except the backing plates and both sides fitted in one of those boxes.

Dick Steinkamp's Tudor (which I have driven), has all the new brake goodies including Flathead Ted's floaters. It will be very interesting to see how these compare... his really work great.

Even with Randy's really good packaging, They still managed to bend one of the backing plates... how frustrating. After spending nearly $280 in shipping costs, it's really disappointing. Another reason I'm not excited about shipping an engine off to be rebuilt.

It's incredible how poorly they handle peoples things.
The better you pack it, the harder they try to destroy it.

I just separated and shipped mine...

My rear drums are 7 1/2 pounds each, and the fronts were a little over 7 pounds each..so you save quite a bit if you can separate them

As it was eight shoes, four hubs and two e-brake bands, a box and lots of tape came to 38.5 pounds!

Slowly chugging away at getting my brakes back together. RF is back on, but not after taking it back off and installing the parts for the other front brake in it's place, then back off and put the other back on again.

On the passenger side, I added two shims/pills to the brake pin to get the desired lean forward, but the drivers side acts like the pin is too long even with no shims. I swapped them side for side and they fit properly on the passenger side, so what ever's going on, on the drivers side has to be something else. It's a simple mechanism so I suspect a "farmer-fix" of some kind on/in the actuating arm.

Art,
I've got lots of used brake parts. Let me know if you want to try any of them.

I'm currently trying to remove the locking pin, normal sized hammer is not effective.

Are you talking about the pin that goes through the king pin and locks in the front brake actuating arm? I had a little trouble removing mine, but didn't need to go for the BFH. I used a large drift in order to gain clearance and really smack it (with a dead blow hammer). Once they released, they both shot across the garage.

Yep, exactly what I'm talking about. I'm using a brass drift to get room as to not smash into the steering parts. The car is fairly close to the wall in my garage and it's hard to get twisted around there to give it a good whack.

I hope I'm not going through all this for nothing. I can't think of anything that would make the brake pin seem too long other than possibly building up the area to take out slop. With the brake adjuster backed off all the way I can just barely turn the drum by hand and it actually appears the wedge is being pushed down slightly as it's being assembled.

A31Woody had a good suggestion, assemble without the brake pin installed. Still could hardly spin the drum with it backed all the way off... The brake pad thickness on the one that seems OK measures .156 on both shoes at the 9 and 3 O'Clock position. On the tight side I measure 3 O'Clock at .167 and 9 at .213

I'm not worried about it. Just part of the process of keeping these old cars on the road. Just trying to figure out what the problem is. Randy gave me a call and gave me a few things to check.
