Hydraulic throw out bearing
Has anybody used a hydraulic throw out bearing in their model A?

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
Why?
I definitely would not want to complicate things. The Model A Throw out bearing works just fine as it is. My opinion, Chris W. Last edited by CWPASADENA; 06-25-2022 at 11:30 PM. Reason: TYPO |

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
a hydraulic throw out bearing would probably work just fine.
if there is a need for it. maybe building a low speedster that the peddles have to be relocated or some sort of different application. but for the peddles in the stock location the original style work quite well. are you building something weird? what is it?

Simplified the clutch setup hugely in this installation as the mechanical clutch linkage wanted to interfere with everything and there wasn't enough room for a slave cylinder. Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 06-26-2022 at 10:09 AM. |

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
It would make it easier to depress the clutch for someone who has leg issues. I don't know if that is the reason the OP asked the question tho.

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
he shouldn't have too much of an issue finding one, most newer vehicles use them.
maybe 3/4 truck the bearing retainer snout diameter is the first thing to fit.

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
Bob C, You are making me feel old. The hydraulic clutches I am familiar with use a master cylinder and a slave cylinder outside the bell housing. It basically just replaces the mechanical linkage. Cannot remember the last one I worked on, maybe in the 50's or 60's.

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
IMO, there is nothing wrong with Henry's setup, even for those with leg strength issues. Since we have to modify the arm on the lower shaft anyway (for RHD), I make it a bit longer so that the pedal pressure is less. I wouldn't bother with hydraulics when something simpler will do the job just as well.

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
I agree, there is nothing wrong with Henry's set up unless it's in the way (as was suggested above). This was largely a hypothetical question, something to file away for possible future use. I only recently became aware the such a thing existed. For reasons I don't have space or time to get into here, I was investigating a hydraulic clutch but quickly realized that there was not a reasonable way to deal with the slave cylinder. Just to remind everybody, it's my car I can do what I want to with it and I don't have to justify it with anybody (with the possible exception of my wife).

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
Hello, many foreign cars I owned have hydraulic clutch setup from factory , MG , Porsche, Subaru, probably needed due to lack of space and that’s just how they are built .Didn’t really see a big difference between the two.still have to have some free play to keep from throw out bearing from riding clutch. I could see someone mounting one for a heavy loaded pressure plate, a friend of mine has a muscle car that needs it can hardly depress clutch, not that much fun to drive in heavy traffic.

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
If one has a "hydraulic throw out bearing" and needs to replace the clutch, the throw out bearing should be replaced at the same time. Don't ask.

Re: Hydraulic throw out bearing
Pete, thanks for he positive response. I would think that the same one you used for the T5 would work on the A transmission, they have the same O.D. don't they?
