Default Hub cap noise

Here's what I hear, it sounds like my hub cap are loose and send a hollow tinnie sound out when I hit bumps. These are repo later Ford caps for the 1935 Ford wire wheels on my 29 roadster. I just had new tires mounted and know the hub caps are tight as are the lug nuts and no loose parts in behind the hub cap. The noise was there before the new tires and nothing has changed. So, how do I combat this? Not going back to the 21 inch, dents and unbalanced wheels I lived with for years. I wonder if others have had similar problems and what they did to cure them? I thinking of some caulking with the caulking gun and then clean the wheel and rebalance?

The cure I have done is to go to my bearing supplier and get several suitable sized "O" rings and slip them in behind the hub cap and the wheel. No more noise of rattling hub caps or sticky bits of calking compound. The "O" ring is suitably small enough to slip in behind the cap and smaller than the diameter of the cap.

A small amount of RTV ( silicone sealant) will keep the caps from making noise.

Okay. did the RTV on both cars. Caps seem fairly tight to the wheels when putting a putty knife between rim and hub cap and prying, so off for a ride to test the sound affects. Over a couple of bumps the noise may be down a bit but hardly worth my effort. What do you suppose I may have done wrong? I feel like maybe putting a towel in behind the hub cap just to provide sound deadening. Amy other thoughts?

If the caps aren't loose anymore, that may not be the sound issue. If you're sure it is, maybe try an O Ring and some rtv?
