Default Winfield Head Gasket

Hello All; My friend has a 1930 Tudor with a Winfield head and needs to replace the head gasket. I know that my car which has a 5.5 Snyder's head needs a "B" gasket and I believe that the Brumfield head needs an "A" gasket.

What about the Winfield head?

Is your friend's Winfield head an Iron or Alloy head?

IMO it is the surface "texture" that differentiates what type (copper vs. composition) of head gasket to use, and when in doubt opt for the B gasket but remember to check combustion chamber protrusion.

Brent, it is an iron head. He will want to use copper and I guess the "B" gasket. Is that correct?

We have had very good results using the grey B gasket made by Best, when coated with Copper Cote. Have installed several Winfield heads, all aluminum ,using this gasket with zero leaks.

Thanks Steve. Where does one obtain this gasket and would it also work on a Snyders 5.5 head?

The "best gasket" will work for the snyders head too. It's in my opinion the best head gasket on the market right now. Never had a problem with one, and I've used 5 or 6 of them. Just spread a coat of copper coat on each side of the gasket and instal it. Torque to 60 pounds, and retorque after first heat and cool cycle, then retorque 3 more times after that. Most of the time mine only need re-torquing that first time, after that they don't budge. But I still like to check just to be sure.

I too have had great luck with the B "Best" compositon gasket and copper coat. I have only used it on a Snyder's head but absolutely no problem. Take Steve's recommendation.

Get the gasket that fits the head the best. Winfield heads, and most if not all heads of the day used Model A gaskets. The original B gasket would hang out into the combustion chamber and cause pre-ignition. The Felpro 7013 and the Best 509 are slightly different, choose the one that fits the best.
