In answer to hd1937's question, B-5038 is shown in two views on the left side of the first attached photo. The next two photos from Ford's archives shows the pair of them in place on a very early production passenger car and on a BB truck with an open cab. B-5038 was used in conjunction with a cross tube without a hole for B-5036 (a hole-less cross tube being an equally scarce item).

DavidG,
Thank you. Great explanation. The cross tube on Chris’ 32 has no hole. The bracket that came on his truck mounts where the bumper connects to the frame on the passenger side. It looks period correct but who knows where it came from. I’m sure he will post a pic (he sent me one today).

Folks,
The front licence bracket may be home made or a add on from the Western Auto store?

Its sturdy, simple and complete but doesnt have the stamped Ford design look in anyway:

The pictures David posted the lower right stamped bracket looks very much like my rear brake light/ license plate light. The guy in the open 32 with the dump on the back looks about like the way I must look in there too! Thanks for the pictures! Awesome.

From yesterday, (more baby pictures);

At the voting station:

Also got baptised on the way home. Not really what I wanted to have happen but I guess it was going to happen at some point:

I guess this is what it would look like if it was sprayed with a clear coat:

Off to work the low wood in the shop. Yea maybe wire in the alternator on the 32 also?
Regards,
Chris

Chris

Chris,

There's another rear license plate version similar to the passenger car version on the right in the photo, which is what your truck has. That other version lacks provision for the separate upright piece as its application is for license plates mounted below the tail light as on Model As (the '32 passenger car version is for plates mounted above the tail lamp) such as '32+ commercial vehicles and big trucks.

P.S. The truck looks better dry.

Folks, David,
I agree with the dry look. I have not thought much about doing something to the exterior. Clean buff and wax just doesn't feel like the thing to do? Open to ideas, of what others do with a barn find vechial exterior?
That's down the road a ways. For now the dry look is how it will be. Probably lost some of the 70 years of dust on the way home from the polls.

Reading back through your post above. Should my licence plate be above the tail light assembly? In other words I may have it on upside down?

Ok still trying to catch up here. Holeless cross tube is somewhat unique if I read your post correctly?

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

I'd leave it as is and just use a damp rag to remove the dust. Once you put wax or some sort of sealer on it, you will have lost "the look".

Originally, your rear license plate was attached below the tail lamp.

Your hole-less front cross tube is consistent with your truck being of fairly early production. That's where most of them turn up (on big trucks) as the tube with the hole in the center was adopted very early in passenger car production. The green '32 phaeton in my album on this site has the hole-less tube and a pair of the B-5038 strap type front license plate brackets. It is believed to be the oldest surviving '32 phaeton and either the second or third oldest surviving complete '32 of any body type.

Chris,

My '48 Super Deluxe is flat black enamel. I sometimes wipe it down with diesel fuel to give it a little gloss. It lasts a couple of weeks and I think it looks better, but it catches dust to some extent. I'm guessing Your truck would probably look about like it does wet with rain.

Chris,

As requested, here it is on its way to an ideal new home not long ago. I had it for nearly fifty years.

Well, that was the plan, but the pixel count exceeds this site's limits and passing them through my email doesn't cut it. Sorry. Maybe one of our in-house experts will come to the rescue.

51504bat, Folks,
That Gibbs oil is some magic stuff! They cover just about everything!

I want to get some side boards for the dump bed. Maybe some oak 2 x 6's? Then have the business lettered in to them.

More shots in the woods. I know you have seen enough already. As I look at these there is something about the bed that doesnt macth up. The color is the same on the cab and the bed. But the PO said his uncle removed this bed and put it on a 48 Ford truck to do some work. No idea how long that time span was, but it sure looks like the bed may have been outside for maybe several years?? Or maybe the paint prep on the bed from Galion was not the same as the cab from Ford?

We had a light coating of snow last night temps in the low 30's. Need to get the chains on the Ford Jublilee, in case we get the "big one"!
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
Off in another corner of my world. So I really like hemlock lumber, Since a kid I have marveled at its durability as barn and shed siding. My sugarhouse is primarily built from rough cut hemlock I purchased locally from a circular mill. The new shed has 10 inch wide hemlock shiplap 7/8 thick with rough side out , around the outside bottom 3 feet. On the inside above the wainscoting of steel, I have 8 inch wide 7/8 thick shiplap with the smooth side exposed. All of these were screwed in place. The inside main walls will be coated with the poly by tomorrow evening. Then I have the stair well and loft to work on. I think I will have about 10 gallons of that Varathane material on the inside. and about 4 gallons of stain/ sealer on the outside.

The ragged ol' truck got nothing but the battery charged and the headlights removed again.

Regards,
Chris

As usual making great progress on the shop. Once you move onto to winter projects for the '32 have you thought about how you're going to mount the mud flaps? Also you mentioned sideboards with the company name painted on them. Have you considered just having the doors lettered with the name? Painting a logo on the doors of my '39 really made it stand out. I get comments on it all the time. Just a thought.

51540bat,
I do not have anything noodled out for the flaps. I still have the old ones but I didn't think they looked good. I do have a call into our local custom trailer manufacture, Rogers Brothers, they gave been making trailers since 1905. They may have some art work from the 30's on mud flaps? Any other suggestions?
Logo in the doors could be a option in some fashion too. Yours look good on your truck. The side boards also. All these things may have a new look to them? Not sure about that like? May have to prototype them. Maybe get my artist son to do some photo shop work?
Mounting flaps? Some type of bolt on structure maybe?
Regards,
Chris

Will D,
Thank you for posting these pictures of David's car! Wow!
It is stunning! He has set the bar pretty high! I enjoy his books and detailed knowledge in the 32 Ford cars and commerical units.
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
Cooper and I decided to take the 32 for a drive. We ended up going around a couple blocks, about 8 miles. He was worried we would run out of gas! He also got to drive the 32 for a little while and before we left he had to have me put the bed up. He said "Papa! It is a dump truck!

Coop took this, pretty good through the windshield shot:

Ok will probably get heck for this, no kid restraint, steel dash, standing on the floor, I can see it all now! Must admit it reminded me of 65 years ago in my uncles old Chevy dump truck, when I was this age. Same thing, standing on the floor, steel dash, lurching along.

He was pretty serious about driving the truck:

We have fairly flat roads around here. But I have found the 32 seems happiest chugging along about 20 mph. come to a corner and just gently bring it back up to speed.

Yea I know more pictures, sorry just what I do. Back to coating wood. Electrical work tomorrow.
Regards,
Chris
