Temp gauge installation

I plan to install a lower water inlet with a port to install a water temp gauge. . . seems pretty easy. Looking for any advice/guidance.

If you're talking about the lower radiator hose you will not get an accurate reading

The reading you get from there will be waaay low because it will be reading the temperature AFTER your coolant has gone through the the radiator. How much depends on how well your radiator does its job. The best place for the sensor is in the water outlet at the front of the head.

Several Parts Houses Sell A Short tube with a fitting for a temp. sending unit that fits in the top radiator hose. I have used them in the past worked great

Go with Vintage Precision great product and has outlet for gauge. Easy to take apart and clean out. ( rust flakes will collect on the inbound side of the thermos.)

Bill's idea is slicker than snot, ideal for the Model A. You could keep tabs on engine temp. and radiator efficiency. Then comes a sensor in the rear of the block to monitor rust corruption at 3&4, before the pistons began to grab the walls.

I replaced the gooseneck above the water pump with one that has a boss for a temperature sensor and it works very well. Routed the line through the junction box to the gauge mounted just below the speedometer. Very pleased with the installation.

Yep, thats what I'm changing to this winter, looks much cleaner and with less clamps, meaning less opportunity for leaks.

I did the top water outlet housing with the tapping for the temperature probe. It works impressively well.

Not to highjack this thread but, is that the way the crankcase vent tube is supposed to be routed?

I didn't realize that this was an aftermarket accessory type thing. I guess I should have as all of the vendors sell fill tube caps that are just that, a cap with no tube. So if you just have the cap, how does the crankcase vent?.

Through the cap. The tabs inside the cap hold it up off of the top of the tube.

I don't think it gets better than this, Vintage Precision housing with Thermostat in stalled, probe for temp gauge running through junction box, Clean, and neat!

I have the same set-up that Mark has. The VP T-stat housing has 2 outlets on it. I use one for the temp gauge and the other for my heater water.

How much temp drop should a good radiator measure? I suspect the one i am working on is shot. It drops only about ten degrees when measured with an hand held IR measuring tool.. I am thinking 20 degrees might be a target?

My original 1928 radiator drops the temp about 20 degrees. I back flushed my cooling system by using a sump pump, after I used vinegar for a month. Vinegar made a mess, and next time I'll use RUST911.

Chief always chose the L/R side of the cylinder head. Study a head & you'll find a good spot to drill & tap. That was a common spot on MANY Flathead Engines.

My A had the breather vent tube routed along and inside of the left frame rail under the drivers seat instead of below the car to take advantage of the draft. I still wonder about that.

JoeMarine, I see this thread is a couple of months old but when selecting a gauge I prefer the Mechanical SW 270° sweep gauges. Easier for me to read.

Yes, you want the end of the tube 'in the breeze' below the car to create a low pressure area at the tube end to help pull the 'Bad Stuff" (water and unburned hydrocarbons) out of the crankcase. Better known as a "Road Draft Tube".

Also helps keep the left side of your engine compartment clean.

I have a temp gauge on all 3 of my Model As. I put the threaded fitting in the outlet myself because I don't like the idea of having it come out the side like the ones the vendors flog. Once the sensor is installed, it makes getting to the head nut directly under it, difficult. Mine come out of the back of the outlet.
