Castrol water pump grease
For 23 years I have been using "Castrol WP water pump grease" in the rear water pump bearing of my 1929 Model A Roadster Pickup. I put the grease in a cap-screw that I occasionally rotate to force it into the rear bearing. On the can it says: "A hard grease resistant to hot water, especially suitable for water pump glands".
When I recently renewed the radiator hoses I found a quarter-inch thick layer of slimy orange-coloured gunk inside. I assume that same layer exists throughout the water jacket and in the radiator, but the car never overheats. Should I be concerned about the slimy layer? |

Re: Castrol water pump grease
Yes, I would flush it out with a good cleaner that will dissolve grease, then use less grease on the rear bushing. I would also unscrew the packing nut when you grease the rear bushing, and pull the fan forward while greasing to try to keep any grease from entering the coolant. The new brass bushings with a double lip seal in the rear should help keep the grease and coolant separated.

Re: Castrol water pump grease
I've found that T.S.P. does a good job removing slimy oily/greasy residue in the cooling system.

Re: Castrol water pump grease
The Sept-Oct 1932 Service Bulletin says not to use water pump grease
as it melts at a higher temperature that the water and chunks of it will plug the radiator, they recommend regular grease so it will melt and not plug the cooling system. Bob |
