Default Gas tank filler screen

I had a heck of a time getting a "rusty" gas tank filler screen out of my gas tank.
Is there any secret to removing this item. . .and more importantly, putting a new one back in. I see Bratton sells a gas tank filler screen tool. Is that necessary to put the screen in and out? Thanks in advance for the help.

I run without it. It is hard to fill the tank with the screen in it. Many Barners still use it.
Some are screwed in place. use a pair of plyers and open them in the screen to grab the sides are rotate the screen. Some you can tap an edge to get them to unscrew. Don't cause any sparks.

I don't have the screen at the top of the tank where you fill it but I did
put a new screen in the shut off valve in the bottom of the tank.

Mine was also very difficult to remove on my 30 Tudor. I eventually got it loose by tapping it with a dull screwdriver and backing out with large needle nose pliers. I removed the bottom of the screen several years ago, much easier to fill the tank, with the auto shut off pumps.

Soaking the threads with Kroil and then using the correct tool, such as the one mentioned from Bratton's is a big help. I had to use a long breaker bar on a couple. The screen does slow filling, but if I wanted speed I wouldn't be driving a Model A. LOL

Ditto Tom Wesenberg. I couldn't budge the filter screen on my '29 coupe for love nor money. Tried everything. UNTIL-- I soaked the edge with Kroil for 20 or so minutes-- it may take more than one application. I used the Bratton's tool and it screwed right out-- much easier than I expected! I soaked the screen in EvapoRust and polished it up. Looks like new. I keep it in the tank finger tight and just unscrew when gassing up. It looks and works like new!

Technically, it is not a screen, but a Spark Supressor.

Remove the bottom of the screen & it will take gas faster & still act as a flame arrester.

I run with mine it. Takes a little skill and time to fill but that is why I drive the A, to slow life down a little.

The challenge will be if yours is a screw in type. There are no replacements being made for it. The replacement only has tabs. I am with Mike I have never been in such a hurry that I had to hurry to fill a 10 gallon tank.

Another advantage to keeping the gas tank filler hole screen is that the gas splash from the gasoline doesn't quite as bad overload the gas cap vent and create a paint removing drool across your newly painted gas tank. Also.... Topping off the A tank on a hot day and letting the car sit in the hot sun will usually percolate fuel out of the gas cap vent too. Always leave enough room when filling up for fuel expansion.
