Releasing of stored energy prior to work is critical, doesn't matter if its a spring or not. After 43 years in the business I learned one rule to live by, "cats live, dogs die" cats always access a situation before taking on the task..

I ran up a spreader out of schedule 80 tubing,1 " grade 8 all thread and welded it with 1/8th 7018 stick single stitch triple pass.. over engineered? perhaps..

Try to wrap or work some chain around the leaves or use sturdy clamps for extra insurance.
