Default Wide 5 Artillery Wheels

My project '36 pickup has the artillery wide 5 bolt pattern. I have some questions.

Was this a stock wheel for 1936? Car or Truck? I'm measuring a 5 x 10" bolt pattern but read somewhere that it is actually 5 x 10 1/8"...which one is correct?

I would like to put the '35 wire wheels on this project. Is it just a matter of changing out the drums?

I've been researching this stuff all morning and there's not a lot of info out there.

Thx.

I know they are not 10" because I had a plate drilled on 10" and they did not fit. I think they are 10-1/4". (Someone please confirm.)

Wide fives were stock for 1936 to 1939 cars and 1/2 ton pickups.

Has your truck been converted to hydraulics? That may have a bearing on hub selection.

If stock 36 spindles, I'm not sure if 35 type drums (for which there are no replacements currently available) will fit due to differences in spindle length.

If you have hydraulics and 37 type spindles already, 40-48 hub/drums would be the recommendation.

I only really have experience of the hydraulic setups so I'm a bit shaky on earlier stuff.

Can you say what exactly do you have now, and what exactly do you want to end up with?

Mart.

I have a completely stock '36 setup. Manual drums brakes and no intention of going hydraulic. Are '35 drums my only option?

It’s 5 x 10.25”. These were “change over” wheels, produced by Kelsey-Hayes and perhaps others. I’ve not found a Ford assigned part number for the early 5 x 10.25s. Below is a 1935 K-H sales brochure for them. I also have a 1938 dealer marketing brochure for them. Stu

Be aware that if you use a drum newer then 35, you will need an adapter to safely run the wire wheels due to the lug area of the wheel . It is actually a couple of rings and in the old days they used a model A piston ring (not recommended, rings were cast).

I guess my question now is am I limited to a '35 drum only if I want to change? And the next question would be availability.

You could always take heed of the unwritten rule.. Never fit a wheel earlier than those fitted as stock. In other words either go to the 40 type steelies or stick with what you have.

I think if the '35 drum is not available I will just stick to what I have...thx. Searching for used availability but not finding anything yet.

I can't see why there would be any advantage to converting from a 36-39 wide 5 wheel to a '35 wire wheel.
Ford Motor was very proud of the '36 wheel design, it was five pounds per wheel lighter, ran true, giving a better ride.

I agree with blue car (my avatar runs them with F100 brakes up front using an American Racing steel adapter, and 36 drums out back with juice brakes) but if you are hell bent on running the 35 wires, you can run 40-48 drums on your 35, stay manual, and your 35s will mount up no problem and no adaoter needed ....

The advantage is only personal. I like the looks of the wire wheels.

I think 35 is your only option due to spindle design.

A comment: finding original drums within the limit [.060' Oversize] is very difficult now days. while new '40 style [and Lincoln bendix] are now available. Newc
