1929 Tudor Boneheaded Mistake!!
Well Lucy, what have you done now!!
While attempting to install new shackle bushings into the front perch, using a Universal Bushing Installation & Removal Tool (in other words, a big punch). I have proceeded to get the installation tool stuck in the perch assembly. I kind of thought that it was getting a bit harder to drive the tool during the last quarter of inch or so, but a few harder hits with the 5lb hammer did the trick, and it seated the bushing. Now then the fun begins; I cannot get the s.o.b. tool out! This morning while attempting to drive the tool out from the front, the punch moved and I proceeded to hit my left wrist with the hammer and that caused me to leave my blood and other assorted bits of DNA all over the garage floor. Also with a few choice oaths and assorted bad words, my wife who is a RN, heard the uproar and without a word just you know, giving me the “LOOK”, decided that I needed to get an X-Ray, and perhaps a stitch or two where the hammer split the skin open, hauled me to the 24Hr clinic, where we discovered that nothing was broken, (other than my pride)! Now then, I sit here typing with one finger with an ice bag on my wrist wondering what my next step in resolving this dilemma is. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. You could try a bit of heat on the area around the bushing. It might expand it enough to let you drive the tool out. Go easy and be careful.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. After you beat your driver out most likely you will ruin the bushing order one of these from Brattons. They remove and install the bushings perfectly and only cost 9.50...feel better soon....

You may be able to grip the knurled end of your punch with an old pipe wrench. I say old because I have broken the jaws on new ones, so now I buy old ones when I find them, if the teeth on the jaw re still salvageable.

When I made my bushing driver, I only made the small diameter 1/2" long and 0.005 undersize just for that possibility. The major diameter must be undersize too to prevent "sticking."

Congrats, you were at least able to take and post a picture with one mangled hand.

Buy another car....or heal up and have a beer or two and go after it with some heat and I would try an air hammer with a big punch on it.

Knock it back out. If it screws up the bushing in the process so be it. Put in another...they're cheap.That's how you learn and how the advice from others on this forum comes to be. By peoples experiences and mistakes and we all make them. Do what the model a man suggests. All thread and nuts and washers to pull it into the perch. It's a lot more controllable than beating it in. Put a little oil on both parts before you install so it is not a dry fit. Not that big of a deal. You can do it !!

Like #4 said try to turn it with a pipe wrench but have a friend use a punch from the front at the same time you are turning it.

Well, you did what we all have done at one time or another. Some of the above replys are worth considering. Lesson learned the hard way, right tool for the right job. Yes better order some new bushings also. This was not a job for a bigger hammer. Good luck and mend that hand.

The black bird look is painful.
In my case, I think it is from the spanish genes, or not. Try a brass punch to drive out the wedged driver to avoid mushrooming the small end. I like #4's pipe wrench approach, but you might need a second helper. Bob |

I must be missing something.....
I would try the obviously obvious by driving it out from the other end with a smaller diameter punch. Oh, and it is amazing at how many times something can be posted on the pertinent forums before it sinks in. If you are not restoring to judging standards, USE DELRIN OR URETHANE BUSHINGS! They go in and out with hand pressure. They will generally outlast the car also. To get the old one out, split it with a cape chisel or coping saw blade. You can then push it out with your finger. |
