Default Brake shoe repair

I just gave my first try at relining my 39 brake shoes seemed all was good until the last hole
It was off just a bit and the rivet went side ways cracking, I'm assuming it's garbage now

There are some things that are best left to the professionals... Brake relining is one of them.
Did you check the metal base parts for cracks and/or trueness to the drum before you attempted to install new lining? If not, mistake number one, then the list grows.

Isn't that what super glue is for? It looks like it was a wee bit long on the shoe. if the drum is a bit larger than stock it might never come into contact or be a problem. you could take it to a (real) brake shop and have 1 lining done if it bothers you. Sometimes professionals are good, but now you know how to do another restoration job, so it is a nuisance but not a waste.

The lining has to be tight to the shoe between the rivits too

Thanks guys, they are correct length and tight just after market holes do not line up great to factory metal, I'm by no means a professional, but thought I would do a little better then off the boat bolt on shoes, I have 40 sets I was going to attempt. Half the pile maybe a better company for linings? Who is everyone using

I did the same. The shoe material is pretty fragile. I made the decision to use it. I would carefully file off the corner so it won't break off and use it on the back. That is a rear shoe (long lining) so the direction of rotation in normal use is towards the left in the picture. Taking that into consideration, my gut instinct is that it will work ok.

But that's me.

You might be different.

Mart.

rust revival; Here's a great video of "how it's done".
Do you have one of these machines?

Wonder if you could use pop rivet?

If it's for your own use I would use it, It's on the anchor end probably won't get heavy contact.

Some of the old linings get brittle and shrink just enough to misalign the holes.

I put all the rivets in before I set any, then start in the middle and work both ways. Then if there is any misaligned holes I run a drill through them.
Works for me, Bill

With that KRW machine, you will have success. Proper alignment of each rivet and the rivet holes are probably the critical factors.

Mart, are you sure? Long lining, rear? 39 Lockheed style brakes.
And, the comment about 'professional'... Aren't we all? Back in the 50's, in the first shop I worked in, it was standard practice for us (me) to install lining on existing shoes, with a rivet press like the one shown by rust revival. I must have installed linings, at least in the hundreds, if not more. I hardly consider myself a 'professional'. The suggestion by bbrocksr is right-on, and covers it.
