Front hub seal- leather?
I just ordered new front hub seals and the leather national 5786 seal came. The seals I pulled out were the standard rubber seal. I know the originals were likely leather, but they were also made in the US. Should I return them and find some rubber seals?
Thanks |

I've used them many times with no problems.

good seals dont leak bad seals do leather/rubber/wick/ dosent matter just check the running surface for wear as you may need to fit a wear sleeve[speedy sleeve]

Re: Front hub seal- leather?
Leather seals are a bit more conformable and might be preferable if the sealing surface is not perfect.

Trivia info- The leather Ford script ones had CR stamped in the tin part which stood for Chicago Rawhide.

I have always known there was a "Chicago Rawhide" Indy car. I could never understand what "rawhide" had to do with sponsoring a racing car. Now I know.

Re: Front hub seal- leather?
in the early days rawhide made the better seal as the oil grease would cause the material to expand and give a tighter seal yet were soft enough that it didnt wear into the shaft SMART COOKIES them old school engineer's

Re: Front hub seal- leather?
I too have had good luck with the old rawhide seals. As a side note I picked up a one lung engine about 25 years ago 4hp whitte. It was complete and on a horse drawn orchard spray rig. The rod bearing had been pulled apart but the cap was there. I put a strip of rawhide about 1/4 x 1" in place of the babbit,
shimmed the cap with some formica scraps, turned down the grease cup and I still see it running at the show I attend every August. With the same 'bearing' and my shims.
