Default light bulb finally went off today: parts vendors

Hello everyone. I think I finally figured out a thing or two about parts. Specifically, I live in orange county, ca...so CW Moss is close, but I never see them mentioned as a good place for parts, or anything else for that matter? I know half their stuff is from china, but assume other vendors are too? Now I am starting to wonder...it seems not all the vendors are getting the same stuff, some is clearly better. I do try to use/buy original parts where I can , but some things I need to just get done. Snyders always seems to be recommended, Mac's ads turn some off, Brattons seems to be on par with Snyders...so who do you send your money to?

Thanks to Mr. Mike V. for taking the time to type and share this. His Reply #5 is awesome.

Often mentioned on here before is to be cautious of Model A parts shipping cost because depending on who one buys from, shipping cost could be far more or far less than the cost of the parts.

Some parts suppliers sometimes know what other parts suppliers are offering.

If you are close to CW Moss, then stop by and grab a catalog. Ask to look at a particular part you are interested in buying, if you don't like the way a part looks then tell them. You don't have to buy it. They are stocking more parts now, not everything. Consider how much freight is compared to the tax rate. I think you'll find the freight is more.

I had to buy a replacement bulb for my cowl light. It's one that has 2 filaments for park & turn, therefore not readily available except from the Model A vendors. Bulb cost $1.89, shipping was close to $10.00

I probably would have waited to tag this onto something else, except that with that bulb burned out, my RH turn signals didn't work. We have a couple more events this season, so I bit the bullet. While I was at it, I bought several so that this won't happen to me again.

Just to give credit where credit is due, the list in post #5 above is Pluck's list from the Sticky at the top of the page.

No paper catalog, online only. Mostly but not all hot rod.

I like Snyders, Brattons, and Bert's.

I do go there for parts, and use the other online sources. I just wondered why I rarely see them mentioned or recommended?

I had high hopes for CW Moss, having been referred by a couple guys at a car show. So, I headed down there. I had a half dozen common items on my shopping list.

Big place, 3 different shops in one - show room, parts shop, and hot rod shop. Most of their Model A parts selection was blemished knock-off tail light lenses. Ok, whatever. Some generic repop stuff on the shelf, like you'd find at any of the online suppliers.

I found two things I needed. Didn't see paint anywhere, so I went up to the parts counter.

"Do you have a can of Ford engine green paint?"
"Huh?"
"Ford engine green paint."
"What's that?"
"The paint for Model A engines and transmissions."
"Nope. Don't have anything like that. You should try one of the local paint stores."

Really? This is the local Model A supplier?!

I don't know where you got that about the paint! I was in there recently and bought a couple cans. In fact when I asked for paint he asked it I wanted it in the can for a spray gun or the aerosol can.

Now CW Moss is in the middle of the row. Hot Rod show room of somebody not a part of Moss on the left. Reed's hot rod shop on the other side, not a part of Moss. Moss is in the middle so don't confuse the places on either side. Their products, Moss, are no different than the other suppliers. Parts I've bought from other suppliers in the past have the same label, same part number as what Moss has. Not saying all parts, just the ones I have bought. Moss doesn't carry everything Snyders, Bert's, or Brattons, but have a good selection and usually in stock or will have in the next week as stocked.

I ordered some 600 weight oil from CW Moss. I was looking for a particular brand which is pictured in their catalog, as the distributor of that brand specifically referred me to CW moss as a retailer. So, I ordered it. Got the package lightning fast and I was impressed. Opened the box and inside was 600 W oil, all right, but it was Mac's!

Gotta watch out for that MAC's, they are a sneaky bunch.

Yep, too bad we have to ask specifically which brand we get. It even gets worse when you read the instructions on that Mac's bottle. They have it on their shelf and I refuse to buy it instead will either accept the white bottle stuff same as the other vendors or pass on it. There is an advantage to having a local vendor as opposed to online ordering, you can examine before you pay and go out the door. I'd rather pay the local tax than the shipping. Some of their prices are lower, some are higher and it all averages out. If in doubt, call them.

I "got that" from my own personal experience when I went in there a year ago.

No confusion here.

A lot has changed there from a year ago. A lot... They stock much more for parts and a knowledgeable staff that knows the inventory. Check them out. You'll be surprised. One of the counter guys has a Model A.
