Default Body Filler Find!!!

If you guys need to do any major body filler, I found a product POR 15 Epoxy Putty. It is one sensational product.
Attached are before and after pictures of the joint between the A column and the roof on the driver's side.

I can not believe the difference.

Thanks,

"Looks" good. However, the real test will come when the body starts to flex while driving.

I agree with Vin-tin, flexing is what can cause problems with filler. Maybe the area where the filler is wont flex much, but it probably will to a certain extent. Keep us posted on the results when you start driving the car.

I think I would separate the joint with a thin bladed saw so flexing would not break the filler out or in the wrong area. I don't think the factory filled that joint although it seems kinda wide in the photo.

It is my opinion this repair is going to haunt you. That area was originally welded and a thin layer of lead was placed over the top of the weld. The flex in this area is probably too great for an unwelded panel to keep from cracking filler.

One other suggestion. My experiences is that no one company has the marketshare on autobody products, however I would be much more open to use a Kevlar-stranded filler in this application simply because it has the ability to flex a bit when it is in a thin application.

Epoxy material compositions and epoxy flexural strengths differ greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer with and without fiberglass reinforcement cloth.

POR 15 also offers their recommended fiberglass cloth to go with their specially formulated POR 15 epoxy for filling in highly stressed patched areas.

If you call and ask for a technician at POR, these guys are well trained to recommend what to use on specific applications.

If you didn't get a good weld on that pillar, don't be surprised if it cracks the first time you back out of your driveway at an angle.

For cleaning up the welds in the corners a dremel with a flexible cutoff wheel will do wonders in shaping in to the corner.

Regular Bondo would have accomplished the same results, and the long term results would be the same as well.

It might last a long time, if you don't take it out of the garage. Otherwise the first time the body flexes, it will crack.

John,

For "Peace" of mind:

1. First think; (a totally lost art in America today); and

2. Next, try catching several big fish with a 2017 modern fiberglass fishing rod to "experience" the amount of flexural stress and tensile stress that small diameter reinforced fiberglass is capable of enduring on multiple big fish catches for many years; and,

3. Remember they quit selling small diameter failing steel fishing rods years ago; and,

4. Afterwards, try calling a POR technician for POR 15 advice for your particular Model A application.

Grind it out, weld it up, fill it back up with the filler.
