Default Windshield installation

I just got a 31 5 window coupe and trying to figure out how to get the window mounted correctly again. The guy I bought it from just mounted it in with screws solid and I think I've found everything now to make it open again but woundered if anyone has pictures of how the hinge mounts to the frame and how it all goes together? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric

HI Eric, and welcome to the barn. I will be watching this thread as I would like to replace the gasket on my car. Where are you located and how about a few pics of the car?

Mike

Hi Eric,

Is that a 426 or 427? Just a heads up, be prepared for some 'lively discussion' about your hot rod. Nice looking car and I bet it moves VERRY QUICKLY!

its a 1952 331 chrysler hemi, I would never have torn apart a nice orginal coupe but this car has been cut and modified back in the 50's and thats why I traded for it I got just the body and already had the frame and engine as another vehicle. I appreciate all the help.
Thanks,
Eric

Thanks for the help, I need to see how the hinge hooks on the window frame and how the hinge connects to the body.

O.k. I see how the hinge piece bolts to the window frame after removal of the window but how does the hinge attach to the car?

Welcome to the barn. Awesome Hemi! The hinge attaches to the wood header above the windshield, Assuming the wood header is still there.

Ok I might be missing something on my window frame. Does the flat section bolt to the wood? and the curved piece of the hinge connect to the window frame? My frame was just screwed into the body with a couple sheet metal screws when I got the body, I bought the hinge, arms and nuts and screws to install it but may still be missing something. This is my first A-model and I'm trying to correct a bunch of problems that has been done to the body in the last 50 years.
Thanks,
Eric

Thanks to Curt and everyone that's commented on my post. From the pictures that Curt sent me my window frame has had the part that the hinge slides into cut off. I can see a not so straight line were it was cut and theres nothing to connect the hinge too. So I am going to have to find a new top section for my frame or get another hinge and try to put it on the window frame. Any suggestions.
Again Thanks to everyone for the help.
Eric

Is your windshield made of aluminum since it's metal color? If so, the hinge will be different than the steel windshields. I checked Snyder's website to see if the hinge was available separately but didn't indicate that. You could always call them or other major suppliers and see if they would sell only the hinge. Since it looks like your windshield is chopped you likely want to keep it vs. buying a new stock unit. Here is Snyder's link to their windshields: http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/mo...dcarwindshield

The frame is metal and yes its chopped and fit the window opening correctly. So I don't want to replace if I can keep from it.

Thanks Skibb, that hinge doesn't resemble mine what you is your car? The hinge I got for my 31 is just flat then the curve.

Yunno. Chop can be "undone."

Just kidding. It's a blast from the past. I would make it work for you. American Graffiti lives on.

I think back to my older brother's friend "Skin" (named apparently for his crew/buzz cut) who had a chopped and channeled 30 Ford Coupe. And a cigarette on his lip and a cig box rolled up in his white T-shirt sleeve (it had to be WHITE - did I say that?) And chino pants and penny loafers. With pennies. The standard uniform in 1963.

I was too young to remember much beyond squeezing onto my brother's lap as we went for a ride - a FAST ride - down the street and around the block.

I get out of the car and sniff - "wot's that rubber smell?" My automotive experience to that tender age of 7 was entirely the family sedan.

Drive on - and thanks! Gosh I still remember that smell!

And we're glad you came here to find out how it SHOULD be. We're flattered that you thought of us first.

I know it was made of metal, but my reference to "metal color" was since it wasn't painted nor looking like any rust, it may be aluminum. As the hinge is different, you need to get the one that fits. Now that you said the next post's hinge is different than yours and it appears to be aluminum, is your windshield frame steel though bare and showing no rust? If that's true than you need a steel hinge. If all of this is different than maybe you have a non-Model A windshield frame requiring a totally different hinge. There have been other make windshield frames that looked similar on the outside to a Model A.

I'll take a picture tomorrow night and let you see it, I think it is a 31 but they cut the hinge part off the top of it.
