Paint for new cast drums
Hi All,
What are your thoughts on painting new cast iron drums? I'm thinking semi gloss, engine enamel, black. This is for a members car and I don't want to go wrong. Thanks, Al |

If he is going for judging I would do as the judging standards call for. Otherwise your choice sounds the best to me.

Re: Paint for new cast drums
Like radiator paint, it need to cover but be thin. Most auto parts stores sell disk/drum paint that is made for the job. No primer. Thick paint reduces heat escaping the drum.

POR 15 coating products ..... been using them for over 21 years ..... following POR 15 manufacturer's exact preparation & coating application is mandatory ..... if one does not intend to follow exactly, please apply something else.

be sure to liberally clean with acetone or paint and tar remover to get a perfectly oil free surface to paint... cast iron loves to hold oil in its pores then your paint wont stick worth a darn.

VHT 650 is an epoxy black gloss rattle can paint that dries to the classic "satin" black that is synonymous to the original. Covers well too. Auto Zone has it on sale occasionally. Amazon has it too.

Re: Paint for new cast drums
I never thought of painting brake drums to be a big deal. Maybe important for a points car but even that is pretty shallow. As far as overheating that only applies to those that go down the road with their foot on the brake peddle. My A's have more relevant issues to deal with. Happy Motoring!

Re: Paint for new cast drums
Save your money. Degrease well and spray with gloss black engine enamel. If you want to spend bragging money you can buy G2 caliper paint for around $50

John Deere makes a spray muffler black that's tough. https://www.greenfarmparts.com/John-...-p/ty25657.htm

Re: Paint for new cast drums
You should be able to buy disk/drum paint for under $15 at the auto parts store.
