Default black high gloss single stage paint.

Hello. My ford coupe is almost paint ready and I'm still looking for a nice high gloss single stage black. I know there are many shades of black, some much darker than others. Any suggestions, PPG, Sherwin Williams? Is anyone tried the Restoration Shop paint by TCP Global?
Thank You.

I have used R-M 403 SS black. The 'gloss' comes from the way it or any other single stage is cut and buffed.

That to me is very hard to believe. I paint to a high gloss by following the manufacturers instructions. I don't cut, buff or even wax unless there is a problem that needs action (rarely). I have great paint jobs.

Nothing against Merc Man but I agree with Franklin 100%

To the OP, I like Glasurit 22 line myself. Honestly as was stated by Franklin above, following the paint manufactures instructions to the letter is key to getting a correct finish. Also prep, prep, and more prep followed by clean, clean and clean. I also prefer a quality downdraft paint booth to spray in with good lighting, but it is not necessary to use one.

I used the Restoration Shop paint by TCP Global. Spectacular results on my 29 RPU.
No cut and buff required to get the blackest black and highest shine you have ever seen. Single stage Urethane. If you go that route, I have the formula for a black that is blacker than their standard product. Let me know if you decide to go to them, and I will give you the formula as I need to hunt it down.

Is Centari Coal black still around? Worked GR8 in early 2000 when a friend painted my Victoria.

There are two types of black paint. A brown black and a blue black. It's easy to see in the light. PPG 9300 basic black is a blue black and what you are asking. I used a little flatterer to knock down the high gloss as I didn't want that.

There is a lot of options today to buy paint I'd ask if the base is blue or brown/red. Maybe get a sample and take it out in direct sun.

Painted the extra rear fenders for Mikes car .

Had the factory paint scanned and there was a studebaker blue that matched better than the new dearborn blue .

Bodyshop owner said to match the old paint better use DBC base color and clear mixed together .
3 parts color and one part clear .
Worked great and is thin like factory paint so you can see the die forming details in the sheetmetal .

Sheen is a tic softer than straight clear and matches great with the rest of the car .
You could of course buff it to whatever point you want but it looks great just as it is .

when you do the cut and buff, you drive down the road, window down, arm on the sill, and feel the door it is as smooth as a womans breast. Put 4 coats on, cut and buff, you will look like a pro

Thank you Russ/40 for your reply, regarding the TCP Global single stage black paint. Yes, I am very much interested in the special TCP global formula. My e-mail address is [email protected] if you wish to contact me that way. I had a 29 closed cab p/u many years ago, but have never seen a roadster pickup out hear on the east coast.
Thank's again.

"Coach black" is the old fashioned black that everything was painted back in the day, just plain old black.

PPG is good but damn it’s expensive. Painted my Zephyr with it.

What do you use to flatten the gloss? How much? Thanks!

40+ years ago I worked in a body shop, the paint cabinet/locker had about 50 different gallons of white and 1 gallon of black. I asked the boss what was the deal, he said black is black. They repaired a lot of cars while I was there and the black was a dead ringer on every car. I'm not a fan of the clearcoat over or the new metallic blacks. I think the black at the shop was Dupont Centari. On occasion he would get a pint of mixing black for matching dark browns, I was told it was a very intense black for adjusting tone. The painter was a da vinci. 1 of 3 painters I would trust. Choice was easy way back then enamel or lacquer, black was black.

I do not agree with this at all. The previous owner of my '51 was careless when filling with fuel and let it spill down the side of the car. Eventually, it took a swath of paint off below the fuel fill door. Since this was the only problem with the paint on the car at that time, I decided to try to fix it myself. I bought about 20 different spray cans of "black paint" and sprayed them on the inside of the trunk lid to see which one matched best. Believe me, there can be significant differences. I did find one that was close and repainted the rear bottom of the quarter. I turned out quite well. You might be able to see the repair in the right light if I told you where to look, but I think it turned out excellently.

Didn't someone paint a mustache on the "Mona Lisa"?

I had a professional apply a black clear coat finish on my '47 convertible years ago. It still looks like it was done yesterday.

We just used a flattening agent sold by the distributor that sold the PPG paint. What they recommended. I don't remember the exact amount we mixed to knock it down, not much. It was still very glossy, maybe just over a semi-gloss. A club buddy mixed and shot it (painter) and I was the sanding grunt and watched how he did it.

Started with blasted metal on most then etched. Sanded. Then urethane sealer followed by a high build primer (no bondo). Sanded, sprayed, and sanded. Then single stage ppg. Wet sanded.

I used PPG Concept years ago so I don't know if they still make it. I used it over DP primer and it is or was single stage . The reason I used it was I was tired of using so called blacks that looked more like charcoal gray in the sunlight. They advertised the black concept as the true blackest color you will find and supposedly it was like the same used on Mercedes or some high end car. Yes it was not cheap but another thing for an amateur like me is really easy to use once I got the right reducer for the right temperature.

I did a lot of looking at black cars and looking up paint before I decided what paint we would choose to spray. Definitely a difference in color in my opinion. Think it was $900 a gallon then. But I don't regret it.

Just a thought Frank....You might go to an automotive paint store, pick out some color chips and ask the guys if they would be kind enough to look at the formulas. The formulas would have a list of the toners that make the colors.
Or, go to some new car dealerships and check out the black colors on new cars. The build sheets will state the names or numbers of the colors.

Thank's Willit Stop. I hadn't thought of the dealership idea. By the way, Will it stop?, is what I think every time I take my 36 out with stock mechanical brakes.
Thanks again.

Yep. That's how I came up with the screen name. That first stop sign was an "Oh s**t" moment.
Since then, I've installed brake floaters.Huge difference.

Isn’t there a paint spec or formula in PPG or any other brand for Frank’s 37 Ford coupe? I thought stock colors had formulas for them even if the color is black. Wasn’t it called a specific name like “Raven Black” or something?
