Priming oil pump
Normally I'll pack an oil pump with vasaline after a rebuild to help prime the oil system. Three weeks ago I dropped the pan on my 60hp in order to remove the flywheel for machining. I don't want to remove the oil pump (the engine is still in the car, an MGTD), so is there a another way to prime the pump? Am I being too cautious here? Thanks, Marvin

Re: Priming oil pump
On the big engines, I hook up a piece of tubing and a tin can to the port at rear where the oil pressure sender lives. At fire up time I let the last two quarts or so of oil trickle in that way, and then start immediately.
My experience with this is that I see the gauge flicker as soon as the starter spins and then there is immediate full pressure when engine fires. On the 60, the pump is of course farther away, but I think this should work...free-est flow should be through the big main passages leading to the pump gears. |
