Default Gen testing question

Ok, went to the Mt. Vern, WA swap meet today got a big stash of Y block parts for cheap-essentially. Anywho, I bought a box with a rebuilt 57 dizzy, gen and coil with plug wires. Probably will chuck the wires and accel coil if it test bad. But, for the gen., if I remember right, I would hook a battery charger (+) to the field and the (-) to the ground studs? This should spin the gen like an electric motor correct?

Thanks,

Mike

They will motor but they don't work well as a motor. Motoring confirms that the unit is functional but not how well it will function. They generally have a data plate on the later 12-volt units that ID the voltage. The 6-volt types, didn't since everything was 6-volt before 1956.
