Default steering column removal

I need to drop the column from the dash. I see the two screws but what size nuts hold them in? Also, do they hold the instrument cluster in? I cannot seem to get it to come out.

Thanks,

Mike

To get the column out, you have to remove the steering box and column as a unit

Sorry about the confusion, I am just unhooking it from the dash so I can raise the body a bit.

I have a 1/2" box end offset wrench that is great for holding the two nuts under the dashboard.
Don't forget, you will need to remove all the little sheet-metal screws that hold the 1/2 moon plates to the floor and pull the rubber pad up underneath them (it is probably stuck to the floor, but it needs to be completely un-stuck). BTW some of those screws are on the firewall side, but the lower ones are under the interior floor covering. Good luck!

Thanks Dave, That is what I needed to know. I already replaced the rubber around the column, so that is a bit easier. Now to figure out to get the bloody inst. cluster out.

It is not necessary to remove the instrument cluster to access the two nuts that hold the column bracket to the dash. I always just feel around on top of that recess in the dash where the column fits in and stick my wrench in there to engage the nut be the feel of it. Hold the wrench in place with one hand while using your big Philips head screwdriver to turn the long screws counterclockwise with the other hand.
If you back the nuts all the way out of the screw, no big deal. Once the body is set back down on the frame, get in and hold the bottom of the Philips head screw in place with your thumb while using the other hand to start the nut on the other end with your other hand. There's plenty of room.
If you accidentally knock the Fordomatic selector light bulb socket out of it's hole, just reach up in back there and plug it back in again.

Thanks Dave. I finally got both the column and cluster out. Now I am onto testing the gauges and lubing the speedo cable. AFter the body bolts it is rewire time!
