Default F1 pickup steering vs: stock 34

Was considering an F1 box for my 34 pickup, is it superior to the stock 34 or should I do a complete rebuild on the 34 and leave it alone? I have a 34 core that is rusty with the main shaft cut off. Still has the pit man arm and steering rod. Either way will require a complete rebuild. I do want to maintain the proper Ford setup rather than go to cross steering.

Appreciate any advice as this is my first semi stock ford build.
thank you.

It is a vastly superior design...if it fits with your build, I'd do it.

I agree with Ernie, the later box is superior. However, how much work & modification do you want to do? And, somewhat importantly, what engine to you want to use. There is VERY little room with a flathead, for the steering. Find, look at, some stock 34's in your area. I've seen the truck box used, and it can be done. But, IMO, not easily. The truck box that came with one of my (long-ago) 34's was heavily modified on the mounting flange area. And, it was used with an OHV engine. (more room with OHV) If you are running a flathead, I'd look into this a little more carefully. If it were me, I'd stick with stock (for a flathead). As Ernie said, if it fits with your build....

Also consider that an F-1 box will change the steering column angle. The F-1 comes out of the bottom of the box....the 34 comes out of the top.

You can buy a new 15:1 sector and worm for you 34 steering box...and when adjusted correctly aren't a bad option.

Another way to go is to use a 36-37 Hudson box, as they are rolling sector like and F-1, but are configured just like a 32-34 box with the steering column coming out the top of the box. Finding a good one can be challenging though...

Agreed, but finding a good Hudson box is so challenging these days...
