Often enough, there are traces of the authentic color inside the door.

Re: Original color
I've noticed flat black paint under some of the trim pieces on my '40 which is Cloud Mist Grey and was repainted at some point the distant past. Does that mean it may have been black originally? Or were there some black primers used at one time in the past?

Re: Original color
Black primer was common. Look behind your kick panels as you will usually see traces of the original paint. Also check the trunk area (braces, etc.)

Re: Original color
Good point and one I should've remembered. I have used this area to match shades for past restorations. Like inside the doors, it is out of the light and weather.
Thanks for slapping my memory bank Dave.

Re: Original color
The original trunk lid could have been replaced, I would
look at panels inside the trunk area or interior of car. .
