Default Overnight camp out

A couple of the local clubs in the Southern California area used to put on a "camp out" in the local mountains. I think it was a two day event. I believe it was held in Frazier Park but if not probably somewhere in that area. Does anybody have any info on this and is it still going? Of course I searched the archives but didn't find anything.

No relevant response, but as someone who often motorcycle camps in SoCal.. I'd love to get my CCPU running and do the same. At the Chattsworth swap meet a couple weeks ago, there was a CCPU with a cool canopy bed that I'm certainly going to copy. I'd love to camp out in something like that.

If my wife has any say, we'll drive the Model a to Camp Hilton.

My friend and I would drive our A's to Big Bear lake to camp. At that altitude they ran poorly. Leo Cabrillo park also was a nice campground at the coast.

"That's not a knife!

Paul Hogan is the guy that pulled a three foot Machete from a sheath and

said "now here is a knife!"

True ... cars do not run as well at 6752 feet compared to sea level ...

but power at 6752 feet is alot compared to 14260 feet!

Benson,

I believe Crocodile Dundee pulled out what we call a Bowie Knife not a Machete. I don't know what our Aussie Barners call those knives, maybe they can chime in.

"Camp Hilton", I think you may be married to my wife's long lost sister. Rather than camp and look out at the stars, my wife checks to see if the Hotel has a 4 or 5 star rating!

Oh well, I can't find fault with much else with her so I guess I am pretty lucky.
Good Day!

I think you are right it might had been a Bowie knife.

J Franklin About Big Bear Lake

We used to have 2 or 3 month System classes in LA and San Jose. One winter we had a long weekend and a local LA guy had a family cabin at Big Bear Lake so we were invited to go skiing. Really great village ... Big Bear Lake is!

One guy from Michigan had a Hertz rental car that he drove up there. The highest point in Michigan is about 1900 feet from what I remember when we lived there.

He called Hertz and told them the car was running really bad and to bring him another car and tow that one back to LA. Of course all that was wrong was the 6752 foot altitude!!

This was during the gas crisis with the hours long lines waiting at gas stations to buy gas if they had any to sell. This same guy would call Hertz when his car ran out of gas and tell them that it just quit running. They would tow car back and leave him another with a full tank.

The third time the tow truck guy brought a 2 gallon can full of gas and told him to get his own gas!

I believe the camping event you are referring to was the Idyllwild Camp-out. It was a popular event many years ago and as far as I know it is not something that is still being conducted.
There may have been something more recent even; if so I am not aware of it.

X2, as long as you don't have to swat mosquitos and other flying insects.

I was old car camping 2 weeks ago. Had 30 cars turn out.
Oldest car was a 1909 Oakland.
Newest car was a 1941 Studebaker President.
3 Model A's, a bunch of Model T's, 1912 Buick, 1913 Benz, 1913 White, 1916 Buick......
What a terrific tour. Camping was only $20 a night. Good times were had by all! . Jeff

I didn't have my Ipad with me. But this is one of the cars on tour.
1913 White. I have had the privilege of being a passenger in this car a couple of times. Really impressive. Jeff

Benson,

Interesting story about Big Bear Lake. I'm about 40 miles from Big Bear and about the same from Idyllwild.

A friend in high school used to have a '36 Ford. We took his ski boat up to Big Bear in April and tried to go water skiing. The water must have been 60 degrees because of the runoff from the snow. We practically froze to death because we didn't know about wetsuits in the '50's unless you were a surfer.

Our family went camping one summer in Idyllwild. When we got there, there were only a couple of campers. We later found out that some of the squirrels had been found with bubonic pleague but we survived!
