Default 1933 Drive Shaft Roller Bearing Removal

For removal and re-installation of the drive shaft roller bearing, and roller bearing sleeve, the service bulletin recommends using tool #A-309. And tool A-310 for the grease retainer. Does anyone have stock photos of the old Ford tools, and or alternate methods used?

I made a video a while back about how I have removed and replaced the sleeve with both factory tool and homemade tools.

the "A" parts suppliers like Brattons have a tool listed for installing seals, pipe fittings can also be used

That was a pretty slick tool and method for removing and installing the roller bearing sleeve shown in Kurt's video.
Since I didn't have a tool to do that on my rear rebuilds, I made a stepped diameter pusher plug that mounts on the end of a long piece of all thread rod and came in through the back end of the torque tube and drove the lip seal and the bearing sleeve out the front of the TT at the same time.

Excellent video Kurt. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a good video like must be 10,000 words.

nice video. In all my years of restoring 33-48 fords I have never replaced this part.
My question is how do you know when you need to replace ? Have been lucky all these years ??? I did once have what I thought was a rear end problem (whine as I remember) tried to fix and ended up replaceing R.E. Any thoughts???

When I rebuild these early Ford banjo rears I always replace the oil seal that's located behind that bearing sleeve. To get the old seal out, the bearing sleeve must also come out. I have never torn one of these rears down that didn't need all three of those seals replaced. However, none of these rears ever had a worn out bearing sleeve so did not need to replace that part. Be careful of the repo bearing sleeves that are being sold today. Many are just plain junk!

JM,
So the roller bearing slides off the drive shaft, and the grease seal is right behind it. Should I just inspect the roller bearing for any wear and forget about the sleeve? I don't have any noise in the drive train, I just thought that while I am in there replacing the grease seal, why not replace the sleeve.
I dont have any leak coming from the axle grease seals, yet.
Thanks,
CC33

The roller bearing and the sleeve it rides in are most likely still good, but this must be confirmed. To get the seal out (most likely not good) the sleeve must also come out. I drive both the seal and the sleeve out together with the stepped diameter pusher plug I made mounted to the end of a long piece of all thread rod. I insert the rod with attached plug into the back of the torque tube and drive the seal and bearing sleeve out the front of the torque tube. Then I install a new seal making sure the lip is facing in the right direction. Then install the sleeve making sure the little dimple on the sleeve locks into position inside the torque tube. Also, if I have the rear completely apart, I replace the axle housing seals as well because in most cases they had also failed. The same part number seal is used in the axle housings and the front of the torque tube. Fix it once, fix it right, as the old saying goes.

Can anyone state the dimensions of the thrust washer that goes in front of the roller bearing and behind the speedometer driving gear?

Part # B 17290 is shown in some Green Bibles, but no dimensions are given.

Are you trying to find one or possibly make one?

Hello all,

I'm in process of doing much rust repair on my 36 5 window. I would like to remove the torque tube leaving the rear differential in place. I removed the bolts connecting the torque tube to the banjo. I slid the tube away from the banjo about a foot, exposing the spline that connects the inner drive line to the banjo. (the trans is out of the car and the tube has been separated from the rear radios rods).

Im having trouble deciding how t proceed, So I applied a liberal coat of penetrating oil to soak all night. I hope to attack it in the morning. Is this as simple as driving the pin through the shaft and separating the two half's or is there more to it?

Thank's for any and all assistance.

Nice Video Kurt !in all the years of working on Flatheads I also have never had to replace a bad bearing ,I watched a Chby owner replace his outer hub bearings with sealed ones because he had oil getting into his brakes ,instead of correctly replacing the 3 seals mention by JM .

A word of caution, the "new" bearing races being sold I have seen are soft metal like a piece of exhaust tubing! The original is hardened as you would expect and those in the know reuse the original sleeve. Unless you have a NOS Ford one, don't be tempted to put an aftermarket one in because it is new.
