Default 1940 Mercury Woodies/why there were none?

Can anyone shed some light on the fact that Fords were built as woodies in 1940 but not the Mercurys........?
The only negative I am aware of is that the Mercury did have substantially more taper at rear body/trunk area which will complicate the transformation to a more or less "square" woodie bodied car....but hey,all things are possible.

I've found pictures of a 1942 mercury woodie.
but of course it is in the later46 48 body \style and was not nearly as good looking converted even as the factory sold it.

I am doing some research in that direction as I am contemplating building one.
It will be a Phantom build of course[4dr] ,but am planning as much an original- OEM look as can be done with my skills and resources....

I have an excellent Texas car[4dr] as a donor,so it is =ON.

In the thirtys and early fortys, station wagons were considered commercial cars and the new Mercury line was an upscale car as a step below the elite Lincolns. Lincoln did not build station wagons either for the same reason.

thanks Jerry, that makes sense considering the timeframe....
Now tha the middle class is driving 60,000 dollar family SUV's I think it may be time to upgrade this woodie to match their lifestyle!....

Now that I think of it there was a local car[1932 Lincoln factory built as what was termed an "estate wagon" I saw several years back, very nice car.

I have built several phantom style customs and have experience so this is a challenge to me even tho it has been done before by others.
Here is a Buick"woodie" I built the body for....[all steel with faux paint woodgraining throughout....]

Ford did not designate the "Woody Station Wagons" as cars until 1940, prior to that they were considered Commercial vehicles. The first year for a Mercury "Woody" was 1941. Various coach builders converted the Model "K" Lincolns of the 1930's into Estate Wagons etc.
