I need to ship an assembled rear end
from CA to MS. Do any of you have experience in shipping a large, heavy item?
I'm sure this is beyond the capability of UPS, FedEx and the like and will require the use of a trucking company. I have no idea how to go about this and would appreciate any insight, suggestions, and recommendations. Thanks |

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
You may want to check with UPS or FedEx. They may have some ideas on how to do it. Also how much is the receiver willing to pay? May depend on how you ship. Could build a wooden box and have it shipped by truck. But cost may be high.

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
Check the truck rates, it may not be so bad -
They will require it strapped (banded) to a pallet or crated in such a way that it may be moved with a lift truck / pallet jack |

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
i use yrc formerly yellow freight. seem cheapest.call customer service for best quote. put on pallet tie it down. ratchet straps will do. also delivery to and pickup at their terminal is cheaper. you could also list it on uship. its like an auction site to ship stuff. you list an item with a picture and companies bid on the load to ship it.good luck

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
Thank you for your responses gentlemen; I now have a starting point and will try to locate YRC in the morning.
There used to be several major company terminals in this area but now I'm hard-pressed to find any listed on line. (Sometimes I miss the old phonebooks!) |

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
A few things to remember if shipping by truck. To go general freight the pallet must be bigger than the extremities of the rear end.You can't have anything sticking out beyond the pallet. If you do,and they even take it,you can pretty much count on it being caught by a forklift and damaged.Where it can't fit the size of a 40X48 pallet you will be paying for two pallet spaces in the truck.Big question is pick up and delivery locations. If you can deliver to a terminal it will save a lot.If you can ship out of a business with a dock or forklift it is a big savings. The other end is important too.Trucks do FOB,freight on board. Also called tailgate delivery. They get it to the back of the truck,it is up to the receiver to unload it.The drivers work ends at the back of the trailer. There is also a charge for residential pickup and delivery. There are outfits that will do the whole thing for you,but it all costs.some will send out a truck with a hydraulic gate, and you can stand there and watch them load it.They can also transfer the load on the other end to a truck with a gate, and set the load down in your driveway. You will just pay for it.If you shop around there are ways around most of the problems but plan on spending a lot of time on the phone.California shipping rates have skyrocketed in the last ten years. The laws there are restricting trucks to late models, very rigid roadside inspections including the white cardboard under the truck to check for oil leaks and smoke testing.

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
Is the rear end been rebuilt and the newer owner wants it that way. If I purchased a rear end from California and I live in Illinois, I'd pay you to disassemble the radius rods, torque tube, and trumpets with the axle and differential strapped together and go on a longer skid. Shop several trucking companies. Some price it every 100 lbs and some price it every 500 lbs. If it weighs on the skid 160 lbs, one company would charge you for a 200 lb. rate. Another company would start at the 500 lb. rate. There are also classifications for stuff. Used auto parts may go at a cheaper rate than new auto parts. Chemical may go at a different rate than food stuff. Ask the trucking company for a list of their shipping classifications and rates for each. Good luck

Check with Greyhound bus.
It may fit in the belly of the bus. |

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
More good ideas.
I'm still looking into the options - seems as there isn't a 'standard' that can be compared from one company to the next. I'm going to call the buyer tonight to see if he can get better rates by starting it at his end. The best I found today was just under $700! I thought of Greyhound also. In the past, we sometimes used them to send photographic equipment from one location to another; but, in this case, unless that one bus was going right where we need it, I don't think I would want them trying to move the axel by themselves- even if they would or could. Thanks everyone! |

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
I would second the idea of using Greyhound. Have had good luck when the receiving party is near a 'stop'. Weight may be an issue with the item though.

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
I shipped one via Yellow from Calif to St Louis, the buyer was a wood-worker and sent me a "coffin" to put it in. I took off the brakes & torque tube and nestled it all together. He paid the freight so I can't comment on that but Yellow delivered it to my place and picked it up a few days later.

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
An assembled "A" rear is quite large --more than 2 pallet size -quite large and $$ to ship, hard to crate--it's not easy to remove the driveshaft and fit it into a "coffin"(like a later "V8), perhaps a partial dissassenbly, with fitted packaged gaskets, ---torque tube driveshaft, ---banjo,pinion,1 housing, ---axles,diff,ring gear,---other housing, radius rods, then it can be fit in a "coffin" box ------if you are shipping several in might be worthwhile to ship together assembled and pay xtra for the size --but for 1 in might be just as $$ to ship the car

Re: I need to ship an assembled rear end
I tried shipping a 500 pound garden tractor from Washington state to North Carolina. The costs I got from various sources were through the roof and a lot more than the tractor is worth. I might be best to just drive there with a truck and pick up the rear end in person.
