.10 - .10 - .10?
I have a '59' engine that was rebuilt by a Ford authorized rebuilder in '60. It is marked as .10 - .10 - .10. What the heck does the third .10 relate to?

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
Back in the day, you could find Chrysler products with this kind of undersize in their engines. Ford Industrial engine rebuilders in Patterson, went to .030 or .040 ( I forget which) only on Flatheads. If they didn't clean up they junked them. In the late 60's I was in their warehouse and saw hundresa of then on shelves waiting for delivery to ?? They had been rebuilt for Sears. They didn't rebuild Mercury (8CM) engines and discarted the 4" cranks. sold them to other rebuilders, I think. Saw a shelf full of them too, but our racing association wouldn't allow them.
Ahhh, memories. |

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
It isn't the cylinders. They were bored and then sleeved back to standard by the rebuilder.

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
Maby it was .100-.010-.010. If they put sleeves in they still had to bore it for the sleeves. Just another guess.

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
This was acheived by peeling out the steel sleeves and honing for .043 pistons. Very common.

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
LOL. Yes. It comes with advancing senility. I sought treatment, but it didn't help the stutter, only made my nose grow.
gerrald meacham - "these had floating bearings..." One would think so. But actually, this engine was rebuilt with 49-53 type crank and rods: individual bearings. Perhaps by 1960, rebuilders were doing this. This one was done by Fred Jones of Oklahoma City. |

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
In looking at the Ford Bible, Ford made some pistons in .0025 and .005 oversize, In the late 70s when I worked in a Ford dealership they refered to pistons as Red are Blue which designated an oversize, I don't know what red oversize or blue oversize translated to in size. I Googled it and came up with this referance to it http://www.428cobrajet.org/id-piston I think i was working on a 351M at the time, I know it was not a 428 Cobra Jet for what it is worth. Brian

Re: .10 - .10 - .10?
Only way to know what you've got is to measure everything up. However, would the third 'ten' refer to thrust faces being 10 thou wider?
